Chapter 15 - The Airport Road

Victor was intercepted before his flight departed, but the investigators found no original company files in his luggage. He requested an attorney and refused to answer questions.

The state launched a criminal inquiry into document fraud and suspected illegal disposal. Lena helped Sofia connect with counsel who specialized in property disputes. Their civil claim was filed separately, supported by Rosa's copy of the agreement and Claire's financial records.

Sofia expected relief. Instead she woke each night to June's crying and the fear that everyone would turn on her if she lost. At a pediatric visit, the doctor gently asked how Sofia was sleeping and whether she had support.

"Not enough," Sofia admitted.

She accepted a referral for postpartum counseling. She also arranged regular visits from Isabel. Asking for help felt less like surrender than she had imagined.

Adrian rented a modest townhouse near Lena's office. He came to see June every afternoon and brought groceries instead of apologies. When Sofia asked why he kept showing up, he said, "Because being her father isn't a speech I get to make. It's a job."

One afternoon Claire called with troubling news. The investigators had found a second ledger showing payments to a private medical consultant shortly after Mateo's death.

"What kind of consultant?" Sofia asked.

"A physician who worked in the emergency department that night."

There was only one name on the invoice: Dr. Samuel Price.

At the first counseling visit Sofia felt foolish explaining why a ruined birthday dinner still returned in her dreams. The counselor asked what frightened her most about the memory. 'That June heard it,' Sofia said. 'She won't remember,' the counselor replied, 'but you do, and your body needs care too.' They worked on practical things first: sleep in protected shifts, meals that didn't require permission, phone-free hours, and a list of people Sofia could call without apologizing. None solved the legal case. All made it possible for her to face another day without falling apart.
