Chapter 11 - The Melted Phone

Brooke looked sick.
"Someone put that there."
Maya said, "That's becoming the family motto."
"I didn't take the trust!"
Grant stared at the charred phone. "Your texts with my mother were on that."
"Yes. Which is why someone wanted it burned."
Every eye moved to Vivian.
She laughed, but the sound was thin. "This is absurd."
Claire handed the evidence pouch to the security officer.
"Photograph everything. Nobody handles it without gloves."
Maya's anger was no longer hot. It had become precise.
"I want the merger documents. All of them."
Grant hesitated.
"Now."
He nodded to an assistant, who brought a leather folder from his cabin.
Maya opened it at the deck table.
The first pages looked like what Grant had described: prenuptial terms, disclosure language, property clauses.
Page nineteen changed everything.
WAIVER OF CONTINGENT BENEFICIAL INTEREST.
Her name was printed below.
Maya read the first paragraph twice.
"This says I acknowledge any claim connected to Daniel Cole and release it for one dollar."
Grant said, "The lawyers called it housekeeping."
"And you believed them?"
He didn't answer.
She looked at the signature line.
There was already a faint indentation beneath her name.
Maya touched it.
"Claire."
The captain leaned over.
"What?"
"Someone practiced my signature."
They angled the paper toward the light. Pressed into the sheet were ghost lines from a page that had once been on top of it.
M. Cole.
Maya's stomach dropped.
Claire asked Grant, "Who prepared this packet?"
"Our family counsel, Martin Kessler."
"Is he on board?"
Grant's face tightened.
"He was."
Maya looked up. "Was?"
"He left this morning on the supply tender. Said he had a medical issue."
Claire grabbed her radio.
"Bridge, pull tender departure logs. I want the passenger list and route."
The answer came back a minute later.
Claire's face hardened.
"Kessler didn't go to shore."
Grant frowned. "Where did he go?"
"A second yacht."
"Whose?"
Claire turned the screen toward them.
May you like
Maya recognized the company name from the merger papers.
NORTHLINE MARITIME.
