Chapter 16 - What Claire Hid

Claire asked everyone except Maya to leave the conference salon.

Maya almost refused.

Then she saw Claire's hands trembling.

Claire Maddox did not tremble.

Not in storms. Not during engine failures. Not when a passenger collapsed with no pulse forty miles offshore.

But she trembled now.

"Start talking," Maya said.

Claire sat across from her.

"I was twenty-nine. I worked security for the shipyard. Daniel came to me because he thought company records were being altered. He had copies."

"Records of what?"

"Kickbacks. False invoices. Money routed through shell vendors. Kessler designed it. Robert Hawthorne signed some of it."

Maya swallowed. "And my father?"

"He was going to the authorities."

"Then he died."

Claire nodded.

"The police called it an accident. I didn't believe them. Two days later, Dock 6 burned and the backup records disappeared."

"You were there."

"I got there after the alarm. I saw Kessler leaving through a side gate."

Maya stood. "Did you tell police?"

"Yes. He said he was helping evacuate workers. They accepted it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Claire's eyes filled but did not spill.

"Because I had no proof, and by the time you were old enough to understand, you were already carrying enough. Your mother was gone. You were terrified of losing me too. I made the wrong choice. I kept you safe by keeping you ignorant."

Maya turned away.

"That's not safe. That's blind."

"I know."

"And now everyone knew who my father was except me."

"Not everyone."

"Enough."

Claire accepted the blow.

Maya stared through the window at the ocean.

"Did Robert kill him?"

"I don't know."

"Did Kessler?"

"I don't know."

"Do you know anything?"

Claire stood.

"I know Daniel left one more copy of the evidence."

Maya turned.

"Where?"

"He told me if the office copy disappeared, the other one would be somewhere no Hawthorne lawyer could reach."

"Where?"

Claire hesitated.

"On a vessel registry archive."

Maya frowned.

"Which vessel?"

Claire looked around the room.

May you like

Then she pointed down.

"This one."
