Chapter 14 - The Blue Envelope

Claire moved first.

She slammed the emergency hatch release.

The heavy panel dropped and struck the Northline man's forearm. He yelled and fell backward onto the tender.

The second man pulled the boat away.

Grant and two deckhands arrived seconds later.

Vivian still held the blue envelope.

Claire pointed at it. "Put it down."

Vivian's hand shook.

"They were going to leave us alone."

Maya stared at her. "If you gave them my trust?"

"If I gave them the original, yes."

"So you opened the safe."

Vivian's face collapsed.

"I used Grant's code."

Grant stepped back. "You what?"

"I knew it. He uses the same damn number for everything."

Brooke muttered, "Told you."

Grant ignored her.

"You shut off the cameras?"

"Only the ones near the corridor. I didn't want anyone to see me go to the suite."

Maya asked, "And the bracelet?"

Vivian's silence was answer enough.

"You put it in my bag."

"I needed a reason to delay you."

"Delay me from what?"

"From asking questions before the papers were signed."

Maya's voice broke despite her effort. "You treated me like dirt because you needed my signature?"

Vivian looked at her with exhausted contempt. "I treated you the way people like you are always treated in rooms like mine. I knew you'd blame yourself before you blamed us."

That hurt because it was almost true.

Maya stepped closer. "What about the fire?"

Vivian shook her head. "Not me."

"Brooke's phone?"

"Not me."

Claire asked, "Then who?"

Vivian looked toward the retreating tender.

"Kessler. Northline. Maybe my husband. I don't know anymore."

Grant's head snapped up. "Dad?"

Vivian closed her eyes.

"Your father has been meeting Northline for months. He said the company couldn't survive another year without the sale. Then Kessler found Daniel Cole's old trust amendment during due diligence."

Maya took the blue envelope from her.

Inside was the original signed document.

Daniel Cole's name.

Her father's name.

Below it, a clause naming any legally verified child as beneficiary.

Maya's eyes blurred.

Then Claire reached deeper into the envelope.

"There's something else."

A small photograph slid out.

Four men stood beside a shipyard in 2005.

One was Daniel Cole.

One was Grant's grandfather.

One was a much younger Robert Hawthorne.

And the fourth man was Martin Kessler.
