Chapter 19 - The Last Move

Grant shot to his feet.

"Dad!"

The secure feed stayed black.

Claire grabbed the satellite phone.

Before she could dial, a Coast Guard officer called back.

"Station is secure," he said. "Vehicle tried to breach the outer gate. Driver detained. Mr. Hawthorne is safe."

Everyone exhaled at once.

"Who was driving?" Claire asked.

A pause.

"Martin Kessler."

Maya sat very still.

Twenty-one years of shadows had just run into a locked gate.

By late afternoon, a Coast Guard cutter escorted the yacht toward port. Federal investigators took statements remotely and instructed Claire not to alter any digital systems.

Brooke surrendered her cloud account credentials. The text messages with Vivian were recoverable.

Vivian admitted planting the bracelet.

Grant admitted he had knowingly presented Maya with documents he did not fully explain.

The recovered backup drive showed Kessler had accessed the yacht network remotely through Northline equipment and triggered the document-room fire alarm after Brooke's phone was planted near the server cabinet.

It had been messy.

Desperate people usually were.

Just before sunset, Maya stood alone on the aft deck.

Her stained dress had dried stiff against her skin.

Grant approached slowly.

"You should change."

She looked down at the orange stain.

"I think I'll keep it on."

"Why?"

"Because this is what started the day. I don't want to forget what it felt like when everyone expected me to be embarrassed instead of angry."

Grant swallowed.

"I love you."

Maya looked at him.

"Maybe you do."

Hope flickered in his face.

She killed it gently.

"But love without courage is just a comfortable lie."

He looked away.

"Is there any chance?"

"Not the one you want."

Maya removed her engagement ring.

Grant stared at it in her palm.

She placed it in his hand and closed his fingers around it.

"You don't get to marry me and call that redemption."

He nodded, eyes wet.

"I know."

Claire appeared at the doorway.

"We're ten minutes from port."

Maya turned toward the coastline.

"And then?"

Claire held a sealed evidence envelope.

"Then you read your father's letter."

Maya stared at it.

May you like

On the front, in faded handwriting, were four words:

FOR MAYA, WHEN SHE'S READY.
