Chapter 17 - Inside the Yacht

The yacht had not always belonged to the Hawthornes.

Twenty-two years earlier, before three refits and a new name, it had been a corporate research vessel leased by Hawthorne Marine Systems.

Daniel Cole had helped design its first navigation network.

Claire led Maya, Grant, and two crew engineers below deck to an equipment compartment behind the old chart room.

"There used to be a registry backup unit here," Claire said.

One engineer frowned. "That hardware would be ancient."

"So is murder. We still investigate it."

Maya shot her a look.

Claire nodded. "Fair."

They removed a wall panel.

Behind modern wiring sat a sealed steel box no larger than a shoebox.

Grant whispered, "You've got to be kidding me."

The engineer cut the corroded screws.

Inside was a removable data cartridge wrapped in oilcloth.

Maya's hands shook.

Claire said, "Daniel used these for navigation backups."

They carried it to the bridge tech station.

It took twenty minutes and three adapters to read.

The first files were boring: route logs, equipment tests, inventory spreadsheets.

Then a folder appeared.

D.COLE_PRIVATE.

Password protected.

Maya closed her eyes.

"His daughter's birthday," Claire said.

Maya looked at her.

"He knew my birthday?"

"Yes."

Maya typed the date.

The folder opened.

She had to sit down.

There were scans of invoices, bank transfers, handwritten notes, and audio files.

One file was labeled ROBERT_06_14.

Grant stood behind her.

"Play it."

Maya clicked.

Static filled the bridge.

Then Robert Hawthorne's younger voice:

"Daniel, stop. You're going to destroy all of us."

Her father's voice answered:

"Then tell Kessler I'm going to the FBI in the morning."

Robert: "You don't understand what he'll do."

Daniel: "I understand exactly."

A third voice entered.

Martin Kessler.

"Gentlemen. This isn't a problem that needs lawyers. It's a problem that needs silence."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then the yacht's satellite phone rang.

Claire answered.

A Coast Guard officer spoke on the other end.

Robert Hawthorne had been found.

May you like

Alive.

And he was asking to speak to Maya.
