Chapter 18 - Robert's Confession

Robert appeared by secure video from a Coast Guard station on shore.
He looked twenty years older than he had that morning.
Grant leaned toward the screen. "Dad, are you okay?"
"I'm alive. That's more than I deserve."
Vivian stood behind Grant, silent.
Maya remained at the far end of the table.
Robert saw her.
His face crumpled.
"You look like him."
Maya's throat tightened.
"Tell me what happened."
Grant said, "Maya—"
She raised a hand.
"No. He tells me now."
Robert nodded.
"Daniel discovered Kessler had been moving money through shell vendors. I had signed documents I didn't fully read. That's not an excuse. I benefited. When Daniel threatened to report it, I begged him to wait."
"Did you kill him?"
"No."
"Did Kessler?"
Robert closed his eyes.
"I believe so."
The room went dead quiet.
"Believe?"
"Daniel left the office angry. Kessler followed him. An hour later, Daniel's car went off the old coastal road. The next morning, Kessler told me it was over and that if I wanted my family safe, I would keep my mouth shut."
Vivian whispered, "Robert..."
"I was a coward. I told myself I was protecting Grant. Then the company grew, and every year made the truth harder to tell."
Maya's eyes burned.
"You let my father become a footnote."
"Yes."
"You let me grow up without knowing who he was."
"Yes."
There was no defense in his voice. Somehow that made it hurt more.
Robert continued, "When Northline found the trust, Kessler came back. He said if Maya's identity became public, the old records could surface. He wanted the merger closed fast."
"And the release?"
"His idea."
Grant looked sick.
Robert said, "I agreed to it."
Maya stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because cowardice gets easier with practice."
Claire looked down.
Robert leaned closer to the camera.
"Maya, Daniel didn't just leave you shares. He left you a letter. I kept it."
She stopped breathing.
"Where is it?"
Robert looked toward someone off camera.
"The Coast Guard has the envelope. But there's a problem."
"What problem?"
"Kessler knows it exists."
A siren sounded faintly through Robert's video feed.
Someone shouted in the background.
May you like
The screen shook.
Then went black.
