Chapter 1 - The Fall

The first thing I heard after Vanessa shoved me was my own scream breaking against the stone.
Then my body hit the steps.
Once.
Twice.
A third time hard enough to knock the air out of me.
I landed on my side at the bottom of the staircase, one hand trapped under my ribs and the other wrapped around my stomach.
"Please move," I whispered. "Baby, please move."
For one terrible second, I felt nothing.
No kick. No flutter. No small reminder that my daughter was still with me.
Above me, Vanessa Cole stood beneath the porch light in a cream dress and high heels, staring down as if she had dropped a glass instead of a pregnant woman.
Then she came down the steps slowly.
Not running.
Not calling for help.
Slowly.
She crouched beside me and lowered her voice.
"You should be more careful, Emily. A fall like that can end very badly."
My blood went cold.
"You pushed me."
Her mouth curved into a small smile.
"Who is going to believe that?"
The front door opened behind her.
"Ryan!" I tried to shout, but pain crushed the word into a gasp.
My husband stepped outside.
For one wild second, relief hit me so hard I almost cried. He would see me. He would call an ambulance. He would kneel beside me and put his hand on our daughter the way he had at every ultrasound.
Instead, his eyes went to Vanessa.
He rushed past me and grabbed her arm.
"Are you okay?"
I stared at him.
Vanessa immediately started shaking.
"I tried to stop her," she said. "She was hysterical. She ran outside and slipped."
"That's a lie." I forced myself onto one elbow. "Ryan, she pushed me."
He looked down at me, and the fear in his face was not for me.
It was calculation.
"Emily," he said quietly, "you fell."
Those three words hurt more than the stone.
"No. She pushed me."
"Stop," he snapped.
Headlights suddenly swept across the driveway.
A car door slammed.
"Emily!"
My sister Maya ran toward us, dropped to her knees, and saw the way I was holding my stomach.
Her face changed.
"What happened?"
"Vanessa pushed me."
"She slipped," Ryan said.
Maya pulled out her phone.
"I'm calling 911."
Ryan stepped toward her. "Maya, don't make this worse."
She looked at him as if he were something rotten.
"Your pregnant wife is on the ground. How exactly could I make this worse?"
The sirens came fast.
A paramedic knelt beside me and asked, "Ma'am, were you pushed?"
I pointed at Vanessa.
"By her."
Ryan swore under his breath.
As they lifted me onto the stretcher, I turned my head toward the porch.
Under the roofline, half hidden in shadow, a small black security camera faced the steps.
My heart kicked once, hard.
The camera had seen everything.
May you like
Then I noticed Ryan looking at it too.
And the color drained from his face.
