Chapter 7 - The House Was Never Empty

I watched the office video three times.

Each time, Ryan's voice sounded less like the man I married.

"Once she signs the incapacity acknowledgment, we can move everything without her approval."

What everything meant became clear after Claire spent the afternoon pulling corporate records.

Five years earlier, my father had invested in Ryan's real estate company when it was barely surviving. He did not give Ryan the money outright. He placed the investment through a holding company that named me as a forty percent owner of Bennett Development Group.

I had always known I owned shares.

I had not known how much leverage those shares now carried.

Ryan needed my approval to refinance several major properties.

He also needed my signature to sell the lakefront parcel that had become the company's most valuable asset.

"How valuable?" I asked.

Claire turned her laptop around.

"Current offer? Just over thirty-two million."

Maya gave a low whistle.

"And Ryan can't close without Emily?"

"Not under the operating agreement. Unless she is declared unable to manage her affairs and a legally recognized representative acts for her."

The fake medical file suddenly made perfect sense.

This was not just about divorce.

It was about control.

Detective Ortiz asked the obvious question.

"Who is the man from the bank in the video?"

I swallowed.

"Peter Sloan. Senior private banker. He handles most of our family accounts."

Ortiz left to make calls.

At six, Noah Briggs finally contacted police.

The unknown number had been his.

He agreed to come in but refused to say where he was until officers reached him.

When he arrived at the hospital, he looked exhausted.

"I'm sorry," he told me. "I should've come forward sooner."

"Why didn't you?"

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Because Ryan fired me two days ago and threatened to sue me for stealing company data. Then someone broke into my apartment."

Maya stiffened.

"What were they looking for?"

"The backup drive."

Noah explained that Ryan had ordered him to disable cloud storage for the estate cameras. The request felt wrong, so Noah quietly created a local backup before making changes.

"I thought he was hiding an affair," Noah said. "I didn't realize it was bigger until I heard the office conversations."

"Why were office conversations recorded?"

"Ryan installed interior cameras after that break-in scare last year. He forgot they had audio."

Noah opened a folder on his laptop.

"There's one more clip you haven't seen."

He looked at Detective Ortiz.

"It's from the night before Emily fell."

The video showed Vanessa alone in our kitchen.

She opened a cabinet, removed a prescription bottle with my name on it, and poured half the pills into a plastic bag.

Then she replaced them with something from another bottle.

I stopped breathing.

Those were my prenatal supplements.

And I had taken one that morning.
