Chapter 5 - The Story He Was Writing

Ryan had always been good at controlling a room.

He did not raise his voice. He did not slam doors. He simply repeated his version calmly until everyone else started sounding emotional.

Now I understood why.

He had been practicing.

Maya called an attorney she trusted from her firm, a family-law specialist named Claire Donovan.

Claire arrived before lunch with a laptop, a legal pad, and the kind of expression that made me feel less helpless the second she walked in.

She read the financial notice.

"He can restrict certain joint accounts if the bank accepts his authority, but he cannot erase your ownership. And he definitely cannot diagnose you by email."

"What is he trying to do?"

Claire looked at Detective Ortiz, then back at me.

"I don't know yet. But if he was collecting medical records, documenting your pregnancy as a source of instability, and moving money at the same time, we take that seriously."

I thought about the messages between Ryan and Vanessa.

How trapped he felt.

How difficult I had become.

How things would change after "the baby situation."

"Could he try to take my daughter?"

Claire did not soften the truth.

"He could try. That doesn't mean he would succeed."

I felt sick.

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

Ask about Dr. Keller.

I frowned.

"Who's Dr. Keller?" Maya asked.

"I don't know."

Claire searched the name through the hospital network. "There are dozens."

I typed: Which Dr. Keller?

The answer came back.

Thomas Keller. Psychiatrist. Ryan met him twice.

My stomach tightened.

I had never seen a psychiatrist named Thomas Keller.

Never spoken to one.

Never signed a release for one.

Claire's face hardened.

"Do not contact him yourself. I will."

An hour later, she returned from the hallway.

"Keller's office says they have a file under your name."

I stopped breathing.

"That isn't possible."

"They say the referral came through Ryan's private physician network. The notes describe episodes of paranoia, impulsive behavior, hostility, and pregnancy-related emotional dysregulation."

"I never met him."

"I know."

"Then who did?"

Claire looked toward Detective Ortiz.

"Someone has been building a medical record without Emily being present."

Detective Ortiz asked, "Can we get the records?"

"With Emily's written authorization, yes."

I signed before Claire finished speaking.

At three that afternoon, the first scanned page arrived.

The intake form listed my name, my birth date, my address, my insurance information.

At the bottom was a signature.

Mine.

Except I had never signed it.

May you like

And beside the signature, under "person providing history," was another name.

Vanessa Cole.
