Chapter 8 - What Was in the Bottle

The hospital sent my blood for additional testing.

My obstetrician ordered the remaining pills from home seized and analyzed.

Ryan called nine times.

I answered the tenth.

Maya put the phone on speaker.

"What?" I said.

He sounded exhausted.

"Emily, please listen to me before this becomes impossible to fix."

"Vanessa tampered with my medication."

Silence.

Then, "What are you talking about?"

"There is video."

His breathing changed.

That tiny pause told me more than any confession.

"Ryan?"

"You need to stop trusting random footage you don't understand."

"I watched her take my pills."

"Maybe she was checking them."

"By replacing them?"

He said nothing.

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know?"

"No."

Too fast.

"Did you know, Ryan?"

"I said no."

"Then why aren't you shocked?"

His voice sharpened.

"Because I am trying to keep you calm."

There it was again.

Calm.

Stable.

Rational.

Words turned into weapons.

"Don't call me again," I said.

"Emily, if you keep doing this, you are going to destroy our family."

"You already did."

I ended the call.

That evening, the toxicology results came back.

The pills Vanessa inserted were not immediately life-threatening, but they contained a sedating antihistamine at a dose my doctor had not prescribed. Enough to make me drowsy, unsteady, and confused.

Enough, perhaps, to support a story that I was emotionally unstable.

Enough to make a staircase more dangerous.

Detective Ortiz's jaw tightened when she heard.

"We are expanding the case."

"Can you arrest her?"

"We're working with the district attorney."

"What about Ryan?"

"That depends on what he knew and what we can prove."

Claire sat beside me after Ortiz left.

"There is something else."

I looked at her.

She opened a scanned corporate document.

"This was filed yesterday morning, several hours before your fall."

It was a board resolution removing me from voting authority due to alleged medical incapacity.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Again, it was fake.

But there was another signature under mine.

A witness.

Peter Sloan.

The banker from the video.

Maya whispered, "So the bank was already helping them."

May you like

Claire nodded.

"And according to the filing, the lakefront sale is scheduled to close tomorrow at noon."
