Chapter 11 - The Plan for My Daughter

I could survive betrayal.

I could survive humiliation.

I could even survive the memory of stone steps hitting my body.

But when I heard that Ryan had planned to keep my daughter, something inside me turned cold and steady.

No more pleading.

No more asking why.

"Tell me everything Sloan said."

Detective Ortiz explained that Ryan had been under intense financial pressure. Two major projects were overleveraged. A lender was threatening default. The lakefront sale would have solved most of it, but I had repeatedly questioned the price and refused to sign until an independent valuation was completed.

Ryan told Sloan that my pregnancy had made me irrational.

Then Vanessa introduced the idea of documenting "instability."

The fake psychiatrist file followed.

So did the forged signatures.

The final stage was supposed to happen after the baby was born.

Ryan would claim I had suffered a severe postpartum breakdown. Temporary guardianship over me and emergency custody of the baby would be requested. During that window, he would complete the property sale and restructure ownership.

"And Vanessa?" I asked.

Ortiz looked at her notes.

"Sloan says Ryan promised her they would be together publicly once you were 'settled somewhere safe.'"

I laughed without humor.

"A facility."

"That's what Sloan understood."

Maya paced the room.

"This is insane."

Claire shook her head.

"No. It's calculated. That's worse."

There was still one problem.

Sloan could tie Ryan to the financial fraud and fake incapacity plan, but he claimed Ryan never told him to tamper with medication or push me.

Vanessa might have acted alone.

Or she might not have.

That afternoon, police executed a search warrant at the estate.

Ryan was not there.

Neither was Vanessa.

The master bedroom closet had been cleared of several suitcases.

Ryan's passport was missing.

Vanessa's apartment was empty too.

"They're running," Maya said.

Detective Ortiz did not answer.

My phone rang from a blocked number.

Everyone in the room froze.

Ortiz nodded for me to answer and activated a recorder.

"Hello?"

For a second, there was only breathing.

Then Ryan's voice.

"You need to tell the police to stop."

My hands clenched.

"Where are you?"

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"Emily, none of this was supposed to happen. Vanessa lost control."

Ortiz's eyes sharpened.

I kept my voice steady.

"So she pushed me?"

May you like

Silence.

Then Ryan said, "She wasn't supposed to touch you."
