Chapter 15 - What Vanessa Said

Vanessa asked for a lawyer before she said anything useful.
For almost twelve hours, she gave police nothing.
Then she learned Ryan's attorney was blaming her for everything.
That changed her mood.
By the next afternoon, Vanessa wanted a deal.
Detective Ortiz warned me not to expect truth simply because Vanessa was finally talking.
"People in her position often tell the version that helps them most. We corroborate everything."
I understood.
Still, I needed to know.
Vanessa admitted the affair had started fourteen months earlier.
At first, Ryan told her he was leaving me.
Then he said he had to wait because of business optics.
Then because of the pregnancy.
Then because my father had tied too much company ownership to me.
Vanessa said the incapacity plan began as a way to force the property sale.
The fake psychiatric file was supposed to be temporary leverage.
But Ryan grew more desperate as lenders closed in.
"Did he tell you to drug me?" I asked Detective Ortiz later.
Ortiz read from her notes.
"Vanessa says Ryan told her you needed to appear 'unsteady' in front of witnesses. She claims he never told her what substance to use."
My stomach turned.
"And the fall?"
Ortiz paused.
"Vanessa says Ryan told her you could not be allowed to leave the estate with evidence. She says he told her to delay you by any means necessary. She admits she pushed you but claims she did not intend for you to fall down the entire staircase."
"That's convenient."
"Very."
"What does the letter mean? The fall was always part of your plan."
Ortiz looked at me carefully.
"She says two weeks earlier Ryan told her that if you had an accident before the closing, the company could seek emergency authority while you recovered. She claims he mentioned the stairs once."
I stopped breathing.
"Mentioned them how?"
"He allegedly said, 'She gets dizzy now. Those front steps are a lawsuit waiting to happen.'"
A joke.
A suggestion.
A seed.
Maybe Vanessa was twisting his words to save herself.
Maybe she wasn't.
Then Ortiz placed one final evidence photo on the table.
It showed a deleted text recovered from Ryan's second phone.
