Chapter 10 - The Night Camera

The recovered video had no sound.
It did not need much.
11:58 p.m., March fourteenth.
Evelyn Mercer stood in the hallway outside her study wearing a blue robe. She looked furious.
Claire faced her.
Caleb stood behind Claire holding the leather document case.
Evelyn pointed toward the front door.
Claire reached for her arm.
Evelyn pulled away.
Caleb moved between them, blocking the camera for three seconds.
When he stepped aside, Evelyn was against the wall.
Claire was shouting.
Then Evelyn shoved the document case out of Caleb's hands.
Papers scattered.
One page landed near the camera.
Nathan leaned closer to the screen.
At the top, in large type, were the words: REVISED MERCER FAMILY TRUST.
Claire bent to grab it.
Evelyn snatched the page first.
Then the image glitched.
For eleven minutes, black.
When the picture returned, the hallway was empty.
Nathan watched the timestamp change.
12:19 a.m.
Claire reappeared alone carrying a trash bag.
12:24 a.m.
Caleb returned with a screwdriver and reached toward the camera.
The recording ended.
Nathan felt like he was breathing through cloth.
His mother had fallen on the back staircase the next morning.
Claire had found her.
Claire had called him in Chicago, crying so hard she could barely speak.
It was an accident, Nathan. She must have slipped.
Evelyn died in the hospital two days later.
At the time, there had been no reason to suspect anything else.
Now every memory had a crack in it.
Detective Mara Collins arrived with another officer. She watched the footage twice.
"This doesn't show a fall," she said carefully.
"I know."
"And it doesn't prove anyone caused one."
"I know."
"But combined with the financial allegations and possible poisoning, it's enough for us to start asking questions."
Claire remained upstairs with counsel.
Nathan sat in Evelyn's study while the detective collected the prescription bottle and copied the USB files.
Elena stood near the window.
"She told me something that week," Elena said.
Nathan looked up.
"Your mother said she had changed the trust. She said Lucy would be protected even if something happened to you."
"Protected from whom?"
Elena hesitated.
"She said, 'From anyone who thinks marriage gives them ownership.'"
Nathan closed his eyes.
His mother had been trying to warn him without breaking his family apart.
And he had kept telling her to rest.
Detective Collins returned holding a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a crumpled receipt found under the false bottom of Evelyn's desk drawer.
A storage facility outside Providence.
Unit 214.
Paid in cash.

The renter name was not Evelyn Mercer.
It was Elena Ruiz.
