Chapter 18 - The Man Behind the Wall

Nathan did not go back alone.
This time, he listened to the police.
Detective Collins led a tactical team through the front of the estate while Nathan waited in an armored vehicle at the gate. Elena stayed at the hotel with Lucy.
At 10:18 a.m., the wine cellar camera showed a figure in a maintenance jacket moving behind the racks.
Caleb.
He pried open a narrow wood panel and exposed a metal cabinet built into the wall.
The private backup server hummed inside.
Caleb connected a laptop.
On the live feed, a progress bar appeared.
DELETE ARCHIVE — 12%.
Nathan gripped the tablet.
"Can you cut power?"
Mark shook his head. "The backup has a battery."
23%.
Police entered the cellar.
Caleb heard them and yanked the laptop free.
He ran through the service tunnel.
Two officers followed.
The feed went dark.
For three minutes, Nathan heard nothing but radio fragments.
"Suspect moving east."
"Tunnel forks."
"Watch the exterior hatch."
Then a figure burst from the stone hatch near the pool house.
Caleb sprinted across the lawn.
He slipped on the wet tiles beside the same pool where Claire had slapped Elena two days earlier.
An officer tackled him before he reached the gate.
Caleb fought, cursed, and finally went still with his cheek against the concrete.
Nathan watched from fifty yards away.
There was no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Detective Collins recovered Caleb's laptop.
The deletion had stopped at 31%.
Most of the archive survived.
And what survived was enough.
Original invoices.
Altered approvals.
Emails between Caleb and Claire.
Medical searches about sedatives.
A scan of Nathan's forged bank authorization.
And one audio file recorded accidentally by Caleb's own laptop on the morning Evelyn fell.
The quality was poor.
But three voices could be heard.
Evelyn: "Get out of my house."
Claire: "Caleb, stop."
Caleb: "Give me the folder."
A crash.
Claire screaming.
Then Caleb saying four words that ended every remaining question Nathan had about his mother's fall.
"You made me push."
Claire answered immediately.
"Don't touch her!"
The file did not make Claire innocent of everything else.
But it changed one terrible piece of the story.
Caleb was arrested on the lawn.
As officers led him past Nathan, he smiled through a split lip.
"You still think you won?"
Nathan said nothing.
Caleb leaned closer.
"Your wife helped me for four years. You don't get your old life back."
Nathan looked toward the pool.
The red tricycle was still sitting beside the fence, drying in the sun.
May you like
"I know," he said.
For once, Caleb had told the truth.
