Chapter 11 - The Missing Trust

Nathan stared at Elena.

"Why is your name on this?"

Elena took the receipt with trembling fingers.

"Because your mother asked me to rent it."

Detective Collins raised an eyebrow. "What's inside?"

"I don't know."

Nathan's frustration broke through. "Elena, no more half-truths."

"I'm not lying."

"You rented a storage unit for my mother and never asked why?"

"I asked. She said if I knew too much, I could be forced to testify about things she didn't want me involved in."

David Sloan gave a small, humorless laugh. "Your mother was thinking like a lawyer."

Elena looked at Nathan. "She gave me one rule. If she died and you started asking about the trust, I was supposed to give you the key."

Nathan went still.

"Do you have it?"

Elena nodded.

She reached beneath her uniform collar and pulled out a thin chain. A small brass key hung from it.

"I've worn it every day for eight months."

Nathan looked stunned.

"Why didn't you give it to me after she died?"

"Because you never asked about the trust. You told everyone not to discuss money while you were grieving. Then Claire locked the study and said everything had been handled."

That sounded exactly like him.

He had wanted silence.

Claire had given him silence.

Detective Collins insisted they go to the storage facility with an officer present.

Unit 214 held one gray metal box.

Inside were copies of vendor invoices, printed emails, a sealed envelope for Nathan, and a notarized trust amendment.

David read the first page twice.

"This is the original."

Nathan exhaled. "The one from the bank was a decoy?"

"Looks that way."

Evelyn had revised the family trust so that Nathan retained control during his lifetime, but if he became incapacitated, voting power would not go to Claire or the CFO.

It would go to an independent trustee until Lucy turned thirty.

Claire and Caleb's entire plan depended on destroying this document.

Nathan opened the envelope addressed to him.

His mother's handwriting covered three pages.

Nathan,

If I am wrong, burn this letter and forgive an old woman for being suspicious. If I am right, do not confuse love with evidence. Love asks you to trust. Evidence tells you when trust has been used against you.

Nathan stopped reading.

Elena looked away to give him privacy.

He forced himself to continue.

Claire is not working alone. Caleb has been moving money for years. I believe he is pressuring her, but pressure does not erase choice. She has made choices that put you and Lucy at risk.

At the bottom was one final line.

The proof of why Claire agreed to help him is in the envelope marked HAWTHORNE.

There was no Hawthorne envelope in the box.

Detective Collins searched every corner.

Nothing.

Then Nathan's phone buzzed.

A text from Claire.

YOU FOUND THE UNIT.

A second message appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT ALONE.

Then a photograph loaded.

May you like

Lucy was sitting in the back seat of Claire's SUV.

And the timestamp was from one minute ago.
