Chapter 17 - The Ring Comes Back

Police searched the neighborhood around the Mercer estate.

Nathan took Lucy to a hotel with security while officers swept the house and grounds.

Elena stayed in an adjoining room.

She had one question she could not stop hearing.

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

David found the answer in Evelyn's trust papers before midnight.

"It's real," he said.

Elena stared at him.

"Why?"

"It's not a secret payment. It's restitution."

He handed her a letter.

Evelyn had created an escrow account for Carmen Ruiz after proving Richard Mercer had framed her. When Carmen refused the money, Evelyn changed the beneficiary to Elena.

The letter read:

This cannot return the years your mother lived under a lie. It can only acknowledge that my family benefited from her silence and her suffering. If Elena refuses this too, clear Carmen's name anyway.

Elena sat down.

Nathan looked sick.

"You didn't know?"

"No."

"Caleb did."

David nodded. "He found a draft ledger entry and assumed Evelyn had bought Elena's loyalty."

Nathan handed Elena the letter.

"Whatever you decide about the money, I'm clearing your mother's name publicly. No conditions."

Elena's eyes burned.

"She deserved that while she was alive."

"I know."

Nathan did not ask for forgiveness.

That mattered.

The next morning Detective Collins returned a small evidence bag that no longer needed to be held.

Inside was Claire's wedding ring.

The same diamond that had been caught beneath Lucy's tricycle handlebar.

Nathan turned it over in his palm.

Inside the band were the words he had chosen ten years ago.

Always, N.

Elena looked away.

"What will you do with it?"

"It's hers."

"That isn't what I asked."

Nathan closed his hand.

"I don't know what it means anymore."

His phone rang.

Claire.

He almost ignored it.

Then he answered.

"Nathan, listen to me. Caleb isn't running."

"Then what is he doing?"

"He's trying to destroy the backup server."

Nathan stood.

"What backup server?"

"Your mother had a private one installed behind the wine cellar wall. Caleb found out about it the night she died. If he gets into the house, he can erase the original audit trail."

Nathan looked toward Detective Collins.

"Police are already there."

Claire's voice shook.

"No, they aren't. He knows the old service tunnel from the original estate plans. It comes up behind the cellar."

Nathan's blood ran cold.

He had seen that tunnel once as a teenager.

Almost nobody knew it existed.

Then the hotel's security monitor flashed an alert forwarded from the house.
