Chapter 14 - The Break-In

Caleb escaped into the woods before police sealed the road.

Claire was taken to the station for questioning, not because Lucy had been harmed, but because forged documents, financial records, and the alleged drugging had turned the family crisis into a criminal investigation.

Nathan took Lucy home.

For the first time in years, the house felt enormous.

Too many rooms.

Too much silence.

Lucy slept in Nathan's bed with the stuffed rabbit under her chin.

Elena sat in the hallway until she was sure the child was asleep.

Nathan came out carrying two mugs of coffee.

"Thank you."

Elena accepted one. "You don't have to thank me for caring about her."

"I know. I still do."

He leaned against the wall.

"I don't know what to believe about Claire anymore."

"You don't have to decide tonight."

"She helped him."

"Yes."

"And she was afraid of him."

"Both things can be true."

Nathan nodded slowly.

That answer hurt because it left no clean villain-shaped hole to put everything into.

At 2:40 a.m., Elena drove to her apartment to get clothes.

The front door was open.

She stopped before entering.

A lamp lay smashed on the floor.

Kitchen drawers had been ripped out.

Her mattress was cut open.

Someone had searched every inch of the place.

Elena backed into the hallway and called 911.

Then she saw a shadow move inside.

She ran.

Footsteps followed.

Elena hit the stairwell door and sprinted down two flights.

A man's hand caught the back of her jacket.

She twisted free, leaving the jacket in his grip.

"Elena!"

Caleb's voice.

She did not look back.

She reached the lobby as the night security guard stood up.

"Call the police!"

Caleb stopped at the top of the stairs and disappeared.

By the time officers searched the building, he was gone.

But he had left something behind.

On Elena's kitchen table sat a single photograph.

It showed Evelyn Mercer and Carmen Ruiz, Elena's mother, standing together twenty-five years earlier.

Across the bottom, someone had written in black marker:

ASK NATHAN WHAT HIS FAMILY OWES YOURS.

Elena stared at the words.

She had never seen the photograph.

Nathan arrived thirty minutes later.

When he saw it, he went pale.

"What?" Elena asked.

Nathan picked up the photo.

"My father told me Carmen stole from us."

"She didn't."

"I know that now."

"Then what aren't you saying?"

Nathan looked at the back of the photograph.

There was a handwritten date.

May you like

And beneath it, his father's signature.

Nathan whispered, "I think my father knew she was innocent."
