Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Trap

Evelyn's final recording changed everything.
Her voice was shaky but clear.
"Caleb came back. Claire let him in. They want the trust. Claire says she only wanted money, not this. Caleb says if she backs out, he'll tell Nathan about them and make sure she loses Lucy. I am going to the study now. If something happens—"
The recording ended.
Police upgraded the investigation.
Claire, through her lawyer, offered to cooperate.
She admitted the affair.
She admitted approving false Foundation invoices.
She admitted hiding the medication in Nathan's drinks several times after Caleb convinced her it was "just enough" to make him look exhausted and forgetful.
She denied pushing Evelyn.
She said Caleb returned the next morning and confronted Evelyn alone near the stairs.
Caleb was still missing.
Nathan's board meeting was scheduled for nine the next morning.
Caleb appeared by video conference.
Everyone in the room went silent when his face appeared on the wall screen.
"Nathan," Caleb said calmly. "I'm glad you're finally taking this seriously."
Nathan almost admired the nerve.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere my attorney suggested."
"You don't have an attorney on this call."
"Neither does guilt."
Caleb began his attack exactly as David predicted.
Nathan was unstable.
Nathan had become paranoid after his mother's death.
Nathan was being manipulated by a disgruntled housekeeper whose family had a financial grievance against the Mercers.
Then Caleb displayed Nathan's medical power of attorney and temporary delegation.
"For the protection of shareholders," he said, "I move that Nathan take immediate medical leave."
Two directors looked uncertain.
Nathan let him finish.
Then he nodded to Riley.
The screen changed.
Eleven-point-eight million dollars in shell-company transfers filled the display.
Caleb's smile faded.
Next came the archived garage footage.
Then Tessa's screenshots.
Then Evelyn's recording.
Finally, Nathan displayed the authentic trust amendment from storage unit 214.
"You built your plan around a document you thought you'd destroyed," Nathan said. "My mother built hers around the fact that greedy people rarely check a child's toys."
One director muted his microphone to swear.
Caleb leaned toward the camera.
"You think Elena is some hero?"
Nathan said nothing.
Caleb smiled again.
"Ask her why Evelyn set aside two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in her name. Ask why the innocent housekeeper was paid before any of this came out."
Every face in the boardroom turned toward Elena, who was sitting in the back as a witness for David.
She looked stunned.
Nathan looked at her.
"Is that true?"
Elena whispered, "I don't know."
Caleb laughed.
"Of course you don't."
Then his screen went black.
A second later, Detective Collins' phone rang.
She answered, listened, and looked toward Nathan.
"We traced the call."
"Where is he?"
May you like
Her expression hardened.
"Less than three miles from your house."
