Chapter 1 - The Chain on the Floor

The first thing Ethan Mercer heard when he opened the front door was metal scraping across marble.
Then his daughter screamed.
His briefcase slipped from his hand.
Four-year-old Lily was on the floor near the bottom of the grand staircase, crawling backward so fast her bare feet kept sliding. Tears covered her face. One sleeve of her pale blue dress was twisted above her elbow.
Vivian stood over her.
A heavy decorative chain dragged from one hand.
"Bad girls learn fear," Vivian said.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Vivian looked up.
For half a second, neither of them moved.
Then she dropped the chain behind a console table.
"Ethan. You're home early."
Lily saw him.
"Daddy!"
She stretched both arms toward him.
Ethan crossed the foyer in three strides, kicked the chain away, and lifted Lily against his chest.
She clung to his neck so hard her fingernails dug into his skin.
"It's okay," he whispered. "I've got you."
"She was having a tantrum," Vivian said quickly. "I was moving that old chain out of the hallway. You walked in at the worst possible moment."
Ethan looked at his daughter's face.
Lily could barely breathe.
"Did she touch you?"
Lily pressed her face into his shoulder.
Vivian stepped closer. "Don't confuse her. She's been impossible all afternoon."
Lily flinched.
Ethan saw it.
Not a little jump.
A full-body recoil.
Something inside him went cold.
"Don't come any closer."
Vivian stared at him. "Excuse me?"
Ethan carried Lily toward the security room off the foyer.
Vivian followed.
"Ethan, you're being ridiculous."
He entered the code and opened the wall of live camera feeds.
"Then this should be easy."
He rewound the foyer camera.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Twelve.
There was Vivian pulling Lily by the wrist.
There was Lily crying.
There was the chain.
There was Vivian setting it on the floor, dragging it toward the child, and saying something the camera microphone caught perfectly.
"If you tell Daddy again, next time I lock the door."
Ethan's hand froze over the keyboard.
Vivian stopped talking.
He played it again.
Lily trembled against him.
Ethan turned slowly.
"Again?"
Vivian's face changed.
One word.
That was all it took.

Because Ethan suddenly understood the camera had not shown him the beginning.
It had shown him a routine.
