Chapter 8 - The Emergency Hearing

The family-court hearing began at nine the next morning.
Vivian wore navy blue and no jewelry.
She looked exhausted in exactly the right way.
Her attorney described a terrified wife trying to protect a child from an unraveling husband.
Ethan sat beside his new attorney, Maya Chen, and said nothing.
That was the plan.
Vivian's team introduced pharmacy records.
Psychiatric notes.
The deepfake hotel video.
A statement from a former housekeeper claiming Ethan screamed at Lily.
Then they played the ten-second leaked foyer clip.
Only the part showing Ethan kicking the chain away and shouting at Vivian.
Not what happened before.
Maya stood.
"Your Honor, may we play the preceding ninety seconds?"
Vivian's attorney objected.
The judge allowed it.
The courtroom watched Lily crawl backward.
Watched Vivian drag the chain.
Heard her say, Bad girls learn fear.
The room changed.
Maya introduced Dr. Keller's signed admission that he never treated Ethan or Lily.
Then Dana testified about the deepfake metadata.
The judge recessed for twenty minutes.
When she returned, she denied Vivian's custody request and ordered supervised contact only pending investigation.
Ethan exhaled for the first time all morning.
Then the judge looked at him.
"Mr. Mercer, I am also appointing a temporary guardian ad litem. This child needs an independent voice."
Ethan nodded.
He welcomed it.
Outside court, reporters had already gathered.
Someone had leaked everything.
Vivian stopped beside Ethan on the courthouse steps.
Police kept them several feet apart.
"You think you won," she said quietly.
"This isn't about winning."
"It always is with men like you."
Ethan looked at her.
"Why Lily?"
Vivian's face went flat.
"You really still don't understand."
"Understand what?"
She leaned closer.
"Anna didn't leave Lily thirty-one percent of your company."
Ethan frowned.
Vivian smiled.
"She left her enough to take it away from you."
Then she walked toward her car.
Ethan turned to Maya.
"What does that mean?"
Maya already had Anna's trust open on her tablet.
She scrolled.
Stopped.

Then looked up.
"It means we haven't found the final amendment."
