Chapter 3 - The Blue Room

That night Lily refused to sleep in her bedroom.
Ethan made a bed for her on the sofa in his study.
She held his hand until almost midnight.
Then, just before sleep took her, she whispered two words.
"Blue room."
Ethan leaned closer.
"What blue room?"
Lily's eyes opened.
Fear came back immediately.
"No."
"You're not in trouble."
"Vivian says no blue room talk."
Ethan's chest tightened.
There was only one blue room in the house.
An old dressing room beside the nursery that had belonged to his first wife, Anna.
It had been locked since Anna died three years earlier.
At least, Ethan thought it had.
He waited until Lily slept, then called Marcus.
The original brass key was still in Ethan's desk.
It did not fit.
The lock had been changed.
"When?" Ethan asked.
Marcus checked maintenance records.
"Eight months ago."
"By whose order?"
Marcus looked at the work ticket.
"Vivian's."
They drilled the lock.
The room smelled faintly of lavender and dust.
At first it looked empty.
Then Ethan opened the wardrobe.
Inside were plastic bins labeled with dates.
LILY - COMPLIANCE.
LILY - FOOD.
LILY - INCIDENTS.
Ethan opened the first.
Sticker charts.
Printed schedules.
A notebook in Vivian's handwriting.
Monday: crying after nap. Remove stuffed rabbit for four hours.
Tuesday: asked for Daddy repeatedly. No dessert.
Wednesday: refused dress. Quiet chair, twenty minutes.
Ethan stopped reading.
Marcus swore under his breath.
A second binder contained photographs of Lily crying beside plates of food.
A third held printed emails from someone called Dr. Keller.
Subject: Behavioral Conditioning Plan.
Ethan flipped pages faster.
No letterhead.
No license number.
No clinic address.
Then he found a file with his own name on it.
ETHAN - PERCEPTION MANAGEMENT.
His stomach turned.
Inside were notes about what explanations he accepted most easily.
Jet lag.
Grief regression.
Separation anxiety.
Overstimulation.
Vivian had not only been managing Lily.
She had been managing him.
Marcus opened a small locked drawer and found a digital recorder.
He pressed play.
Vivian's voice filled the blue room.
"Say it again."
Lily was crying.
"I fall down."
"Good. And if Daddy asks?"
A tiny voice answered.
"I fall down."
Ethan's knees nearly gave out.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A man's voice.
"Once the guardianship evaluation is complete, he won't be able to stop us."
Ethan looked at Marcus.
Neither man recognized the speaker.
But Vivian clearly did.
May you like
Because on the recording, she answered him by name.
"I know, Daniel."
