Chapter 16 - The Bank at Nine

The transfer required two approvals.
One from a Mercer trustee.
One from a court-appointed fiduciary.
Daniel had forged the first.
The second belonged to Judge Raymond Bell.
The same judge who had signed two emergency guardianship orders connected to Daniel's past cases.
Federal agents joined the investigation.
Judge Bell was placed under surveillance.
At 8:52 the next morning, he entered a private bank office downtown.
Daniel Pike walked in six minutes later wearing a baseball cap and glasses.
He never reached the conference room.
Agents arrested him in the lobby.
For the first time since the chain hit the marble floor, Ethan felt the world slow down.
Daniel looked across the lobby and saw him behind the security line.
"You think this ends with me?" Daniel shouted.
Ethan said nothing.
"Your father built the door! I just learned how to use it!"
The words hit exactly where Daniel intended.
Ethan carried them home.
That evening he sat beside Lily while she built a tower from wooden blocks.
"Daddy sad?" she asked.
"A little."
"Vivian bad?"
Ethan chose his answer carefully.
"Vivian did things that hurt you. Grown-ups are handling that now."
Lily placed another block.
"Daddy didn't know."
His throat closed.
"No. I didn't."
She looked at him.
"Now you know."
Four words.
No accusation.
No forgiveness demanded.
Just truth.
Ethan nodded.
"Now I know."
Maya called later with news from prosecutors.
Vivian wanted a plea deal.
In exchange, she would testify against Daniel, Keller, Judge Bell, and others named in Anna's ledger.
Ethan's first instinct was fury.
"After what she did to Lily?"
"A deal doesn't mean no punishment," Maya said. "It means guaranteed testimony."
Ethan looked at the security monitor.
For months he had wanted certainty.
Punishment.
Control.
Now he understood those were not the same as safety.
"What does Lily's guardian ad litem think?"
Maya paused.
"She thinks the criminal outcome should not be designed around Ethan Mercer's anger."
Ethan almost smiled.
Rebecca was right.
Then Maya added:
"But Vivian's testimony includes one claim we haven't heard before."
"What claim?"
"She says Anna confronted her the day before she died."
May you like
Ethan went still.
"And Vivian recorded it."
