Chapter 15 - The Ledger

Claire was moved before sunset.

Too late.

When police arrived at her house, the back door was open.

The kitchen was overturned.

Claire was gone.

No blood.

No note.

Just one broken picture frame and a muddy footprint near the pantry.

Ethan felt rage burn through his fear.

Daniel had taken another person because Ethan's family had once made him easy to trust.

Brooks found a camera across the street.

A gray delivery van left Claire's driveway at 4:52 p.m.

The plate was stolen.

Dana tracked the van through traffic-camera fragments until it disappeared near an old Mercer Systems warehouse outside the city.

Ethan knew the building.

Empty for two years.

Police surrounded it.

Inside they found Claire tied to a chair in an office.

Alive.

Daniel was gone.

He had left ten minutes earlier through a storm drain shown on old construction plans.

Claire had one thing Daniel wanted and never found.

The ledger.

"Where is it?" Ethan asked after paramedics cleared her.

Claire almost smiled.

"In Anna's recipe book."

Back at the safe apartment, Claire opened the stained old cookbook she had carried through three moves.

The spine had been hollowed out.

Inside was a flash drive.

Anna's ledger was not a list of cash payments.

It was a map of influence.

Daniel had been selling access to vulnerable family trusts for years.

Doctors created diagnoses.

Lawyers created petitions.

Private investigators created fear.

Guardians gained control.

Assets moved.

Vivian was one participant.

Not the architect.

Ethan stared at dozens of names.

Then one caught his eye.

WALTER MERCER.

His father.

Dead for six years.

Ethan stopped breathing.

"No."

Claire looked away.

"Anna discovered it before she died."

Ethan read the entry.

Walter Mercer had funded Daniel's first guardianship operation fifteen years earlier.

The corruption did not enter Ethan's family through Vivian.

It had grown inside it.

Then Dana pointed to the final page.

A scheduled transfer.

Thirty million dollars from a dormant Mercer family account.

Authorization date: tomorrow.

Beneficiary: Pike International Holdings.

Daniel wasn't just running.

He was cashing out.
