Chapter 9 - Anna's Last Amendment

The final amendment had never been filed with the rest of the trust.

Anna had signed it six weeks before her death.

Daniel Pike witnessed it.

Then it vanished.

Maya searched county records, firm archives, and Anna's old email backups.

Nothing.

Until Ethan remembered Anna hated legalese.

Whenever Daniel gave her something important, she made her own plain-English summary and emailed it to herself.

Dana recovered an old mailbox snapshot.

Subject: Lily - if anything happens to me.

Ethan opened it with shaking hands.

Anna had written:

Lily gets my voting shares at twenty-one, not twenty-five. If Ethan remarries, no spouse may exercise control through guardianship. If anyone tries to pressure Lily or alter these terms, the shares move immediately to the Anna Mercer Child Trust, governed by three independent trustees.

Then one final sentence:

Daniel has the signed original in sealed storage.

Ethan looked at Maya.

"He stole it."

"Or hid it for leverage."

Police obtained a warrant for Pike & Rowe's storage facility.

Box 441 contained the amendment.

Still sealed.

Still valid.

And beside it sat something no one expected.

A flash drive labeled V.M.

Detective Brooks plugged it into an isolated laptop.

Video files appeared.

Vivian talking to Daniel.

Vivian meeting Dr. Keller.

Vivian paying a former staff member in cash.

Then a clip dated two months before Ethan and Vivian's wedding.

Daniel's voice said, "Once you're married, proximity does the rest."

Vivian answered, "And if he never becomes incapacitated?"

Daniel laughed.

"Everyone becomes incapacitated eventually."

Ethan felt the room contract.

Maya stopped the video.

"That could mean legal incapacity."

Ethan knew.

It could also mean something else.

Brooks searched the remaining files.

One folder was named PHASE TWO.

Inside were photographs of Ethan's medications.

His travel schedule.

His car route to the airport.

A document titled ACCIDENT SCENARIOS.

No one spoke.

Ethan thought of all the flights, highways, late-night drives he had taken without question.

Vivian had not merely prepared to call him unstable.

Someone had prepared for a future in which he could no longer argue at all.
