Chapter 6 - Anna's Red Folder

Anna's trust was simple on the surface.

Lily would inherit thirty-one percent of Mercer Systems when she turned twenty-five.

Until then, Ethan controlled the shares as trustee.

If Ethan died or became legally incapacitated, Lily's court-appointed guardian would gain broad authority over distributions for her care.

That was the part Vivian wanted.

But Clara's mention of a red folder suggested there was more.

Ethan opened Anna's old safe.

Empty.

He stared at it.

The safe had not been empty after the funeral.

Marcus checked the access logs.

They went back only one year.

Someone had wiped the older records.

Again.

"Everything keeps disappearing," Ethan said.

Marcus nodded. "Except what they need you to see."

They searched the estate inventory and found one clue: Anna's red folder had been scanned by the legal department three years earlier.

The digital copy should have been in Ethan's company archive.

It was gone.

But Mercer Systems kept immutable off-site backups for litigation.

Ethan called his chief technology officer, Dana Kim.

"I need a restored snapshot from thirty-six months ago. Personal legal archive. No one else gets notified."

"Give me an hour."

She called back in twenty-three minutes.

"Ethan, somebody tried to delete those backups too."

"Tried?"

"They can't. That's the point."

A secure file appeared on his laptop.

Anna's trust.

Page seventeen contained an amendment Ethan had forgotten.

If Lily experienced coercion, abuse, or an attempt to manipulate her inheritance, control of the shares would automatically pass to an independent fiduciary until age thirty.

No guardian would control them.

Vivian's plan could never have worked.

Unless page seventeen disappeared.

In the paper copy Daniel had filed with the family court four months earlier, page seventeen was missing.

Ethan stared at the two versions side by side.

"They altered the trust."

Dana answered from the laptop speaker.

"And there's something else. The metadata shows the edited copy came from a Pike & Rowe machine."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Daniel."

Ethan's phone buzzed.

A text from Vivian.

I know you're digging. Stop before Lily pays for your pride.

Ethan read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Lily's preschool entrance.

Taken that morning.

Ethan's blood turned to ice.

Lily was not at preschool.

She was upstairs with a police officer outside the nursery.

May you like

Which meant whoever took that picture had not been following Lily.

They had been reminding Ethan that they knew her routine.
