Chapter 11 - The Video

Rachel stopped breathing.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"I was there."

"I can see that."

On the video, younger Daniel sat down beside Vanessa. Marcus immediately closed the folder.

There was no audio for several seconds.

Then Daniel said, "I'm done. I want every dollar accounted for by Friday."

Marcus leaned back. "Careful. You don't know what you're asking for."

Daniel pointed at him. "I'm asking why Peter says money is moving without my approval."

Vanessa's smile vanished.

"Daniel, not here."

"No. Here. Now."

Rachel watched the younger version of her husband stand and leave.

Marcus waited until he was gone.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"He's going to be a problem."

Vanessa answered, "Then give him a bigger problem."

The clip ended.

Rachel's knees nearly gave out.

Daniel looked at her. "I never heard the part before I came in. I never knew your name was in that folder."

Rachel believed him.

Not because she wanted to.

Because the video itself showed Marcus hiding the folder when Daniel arrived.

Officer Bell copied the card.

"This is enough to reopen a lot of questions."

"Where did the card come from?" Melissa asked.

Rachel looked at the wedding frame.

"Someone hid it in our house."

Daniel frowned. "The same person who planted the cameras?"

A noise came from the mill office above them.

Everyone looked up.

A chair scraped.

Bell raised his hand. Officers moved toward the stairs.

A woman stumbled out from behind a rusted door.

Vanessa.

Her wrists were raw from plastic ties. Mascara streaked her face. For once, she looked less like an enemy and more like someone who had finally discovered fear could reach her too.

Daniel started toward her.

Rachel caught his sleeve.

"Wait."

Vanessa saw Rachel and laughed weakly.

"Of course you came."

Bell asked, "Where's Marcus?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"Gone. He left me here because he thought you'd find me."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

"Because he wants you focused on me."

Rachel's phone vibrated.

A bank alert filled the screen.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

$2,700,000 had just been moved out of an investment account Rachel shared with Daniel.
