Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the House

On the video, David leaned toward the camera.

"Vanessa is becoming a problem."

Marcus replied, "She was always disposable."

Rachel's skin crawled.

David continued. "The money needs to move through Rachel's identity one more time. Then Daniel takes the fall."

"He has the old cooperation letter."

"Exactly. That makes him look like a man who knew he was exposed years ago."

Marcus smiled.

"And Rachel?"

David's answer came without hesitation.

"She'll believe her husband used her from the beginning."

Daniel turned away from the screen.

Rachel reached for his hand, then stopped.

Trust was not repaired by one video.

But the video proved something important.

Their marriage had been targeted because Marcus and David understood exactly where its weakest point was: Daniel's silence.

Bell received an update from the airfield. David had arrived but never boarded a plane.

"Security footage shows him leaving with another man," Bell said.

Marcus.

The two disappeared in a dark sedan.

Meanwhile, the bank confirmed the $2.7 million transfer had been stopped before final settlement. The money was safe.

Rachel should have felt relief.

Instead, she felt watched.

That evening, she walked through the house while a security company replaced locks and checked walls.

In Daniel's study, a technician found a fourth camera.

It had been hidden inside a smoke detector.

"This one has local storage," he said.

He removed a tiny card.

The footage went back six weeks.

Rachel and Daniel watched from behind him.

There were ordinary moments: Daniel working late, Rachel bringing coffee, both laughing over takeout.

Then a clip showed the study at 2:13 a.m.

A man entered using a key.

Not Marcus.

Not David.

Harold Keene.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Why was my father's executor in our house?"

Harold opened Daniel's desk drawer, removed a folder, and replaced it with another.

The camera caught the label.

FEDERAL COOPERATION AGREEMENT.

Daniel whispered, "That's the original letter."

Harold photographed it page by page.

Then he looked directly at the hidden camera.

As if he knew it was there.

He raised one finger to his lips.

And smiled.
