Chapter 2 - The Name on the Papers

Rachel waited until the lock clicked before she spoke.
"What doesn't your wife know?"
Daniel stayed with his back to the door.
"She's trying to upset you."
"She already did that. She hit me in my own house. I am asking about you."
He turned. "Rachel—"
"No."
Her voice shook, but she did not lower it.
"You went white when she said that."
Daniel rubbed a hand over his face. "Vanessa knows how to make things sound worse than they are."
Rachel glanced at the coffee table.
"Then explain the papers."
Daniel hesitated.
That was enough.
Rachel picked up the top page. It looked like a demand letter from a law office, but several lines had been highlighted in yellow.
PROPERTY SETTLEMENT.
TRANSFER OBLIGATION.
BENEFICIAL INTEREST.
And halfway down the page, a name stopped her cold.
Rachel Morgan.
Her maiden name.
"Why is my name in your divorce agreement?"
Daniel stepped forward. "Let me see that."
Rachel pulled it away.
"Answer me."
He looked genuinely confused now. "Your name wasn't in the agreement."
"It is right here."
"That page isn't from my divorce."
Rachel flipped to the next sheet.
A photocopy of a wire confirmation showed $300,000 sent five years earlier from a company called Westbridge Holdings to an account ending in 4419.
The recipient line read: RACHEL MORGAN TRUST.
Rachel felt the room tilt.
"I've never had a trust."
Daniel took the page and stared at it.
"I've never seen this."
"Vanessa says you owe her exactly three hundred thousand dollars."
"I know."
Rachel's eyes snapped up. "You know?"
Daniel closed his eyes for half a second.
"After the divorce, Vanessa claimed money was missing from a joint investment account. I thought her lawyer handled it."
"And you never told me?"
"Because it had nothing to do with you."
Rachel tapped her own name on the page.
"Apparently it does."
Daniel picked up his phone. "I'm calling the police. Then my attorney."
Before he could unlock the screen, Rachel's phone buzzed on the couch.
Unknown number.
A photo appeared.
Daniel, five years younger, walking into a downtown bank beside Vanessa.
