Chapter 7 - The Parking Garage

"Absolutely not," Daniel said.

Rachel had expected that.

"He said alone."

"Then it's a trap."

"Or someone is scared."

"Those are not opposites."

Melissa sided with Daniel, but Rachel refused to ignore the call. They compromised by contacting Officer Bell.

The plan was simple. Rachel would enter the garage alone. Daniel would stay two levels away with police nearby.

At 8:40 p.m., Rachel walked between concrete columns under buzzing fluorescent lights.

Her phone vibrated.

LEVEL FOUR. BLUE STAIRWELL.

She followed the signs.

A man in a gray cap stepped from behind a pickup truck.

"Mrs. Hale?"

"Who are you?"

"Evan Shaw. Peter was my father."

Rachel stopped.

Evan looked exhausted, maybe thirty, with eyes that never stopped moving.

"Your father and mine were trying to expose Vanessa," he said. "They believed she was stealing client information from Morgan Clinical Systems and using it to open shell accounts."

"Why my name?"

"Your father was preparing to report her. She found out. She opened an account under your identity so that if the money trail surfaced, it would point back to his family."

Rachel felt cold.

"Where is the money now?"

"Gone. Moved again the next day."

"Then why does Vanessa want three hundred thousand from Daniel?"

Evan laughed bitterly. "Because she lost three hundred thousand recently. Same amount. She thinks the old records can help her replace it."

"Replace it from where?"

Evan reached inside his jacket.

Rachel stepped back.

"Easy."

He pulled out a flash drive.

"My father kept backups. This one has account ledgers. Names. Dates. Password notes."

Rachel reached for it.

Headlights flared at the end of the lane.

Evan's face changed.

"We have to go."

A black SUV accelerated toward them.

Rachel ran.

Tires screamed against concrete.

Evan shoved her behind a pillar as the SUV swept past.

The passenger window lowered.

Someone lifted a phone and snapped a photo.

Then the SUV vanished down the ramp.

Officer Bell and Daniel reached them seconds later.

Daniel grabbed Rachel's shoulders. "Are you hurt?"

"No."

Evan was staring after the vehicle.

"That wasn't Vanessa."

"How do you know?" Bell asked.

Evan held out the flash drive.

"Because Vanessa is broke. The people behind that SUV are the people she owes."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Who?"

May you like

Evan looked at him.

"Your former business partner. Marcus Vale."
