Chapter 16 - Harold's Game

Rachel replayed the clip.
"He knew about the camera."
Officer Bell nodded. "Which means he may be the one who planted evidence for us."
"Or he planted evidence against us," Daniel said.
Melissa looked disturbed. "Harold represented Thomas for decades."
Rachel had heard that sentence too many times lately.
Trusted people.
Old friends.
Family.
Every betrayal arrived wearing a familiar face.
Bell put out an alert for Harold.
At 10:30 p.m., Harold called Rachel himself.
"You found the card," he said.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere Marcus can't reach me."
"Did you break into my house?"
"I entered your house. I did not break in. Vanessa left the back door unlocked for Marcus's installer. I followed him."
Rachel gripped the phone.
"You planted the memory card in her handbag."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because your father asked me to make sure the truth reached you if Marcus ever resurfaced."
"You could have called me."
"I tried, years ago. You were grieving. Then Daniel entered your life. I did not know whether that was coincidence or strategy."
Daniel's face hardened.
Harold continued, "I watched him. I investigated him."
"For six years?"
"Until I was satisfied he was not part of the scheme."
Rachel felt fury rise.
"You invaded our privacy because you decided you were protecting me?"
"I did what your father paid me to do."
"My father is dead. I am not a file."
Harold went quiet.
Then he said, "You sound like him."
Rachel nearly hung up.
"Where are Marcus and David?"
"I can give you one location. But understand this: David believes the original B-17 ledger can clear him by making Vanessa look like the mastermind. Marcus believes the same ledger can destroy David. They are no longer partners."
"Where?"
"Morgan Clinical's old records warehouse."
Bell signaled officers into motion.
Harold added, "Rachel, don't go there."
She looked at Daniel.
"Why?"
"Because David knows you have the original ledger."
Rachel looked at the folder on the table.
Empty.
She froze.
"No, I don't."
Harold's breath caught.
"Then check Melissa's car."
Melissa ran outside.

Her trunk was open.
The evidence bag holding the original B-17 ledger was gone.
