Chapter 18 - What Was Buried Under the House

Police reached Rachel and Daniel's home before they did.
No one was inside.
The back door had been forced.
The study floor was torn apart.
Marcus had been searching for something.
David's statement explained why.
Six years earlier, Westbridge had briefly purchased a parcel of land through a shell company. Marcus used the deal to hide stolen funds. The parcel was later resold.
Years after that, a developer built Rachel and Daniel's neighborhood on part of the same property.
"So Marcus thinks something was physically hidden here?" Rachel asked.
David, speaking through Bell's phone from the hospital, said, "Peter kept paper backups. He told Marcus he buried proof where the money first touched land. Marcus always thought it was a metaphor. Then he found one of Peter's notes."
Evan Shaw was called.
He remembered his father mentioning "the maple marker."
Rachel looked through the window toward the backyard.
A single old maple tree stood near the fence.
Police brought lights and a forensic team.
Two feet beneath the soil, they found a rusted metal box.
Inside were sealed ledgers, two flash drives, and copies of bank records.
Evan sat on the patio steps and cried quietly.
"He really did it," he said. "Dad kept everything."
The records mapped nearly nine million dollars stolen over four years.
They implicated Marcus, David, Vanessa, and three shell-company managers.
They also showed Vanessa had taken far less than Marcus claimed.
She was guilty.
But she had never controlled the operation.
Then Melissa found a final envelope in the box.
To Daniel Hale.
Daniel opened it.
Peter Shaw had written:
If you are reading this, I failed to warn you in time. You were careless, proud, and blind to your own company, but I found no proof that you knowingly joined the theft. If Marcus tries to use the cooperation letter against you, this ledger shows the transactions he hid from your access.
Daniel sat down hard.
Rachel read over his shoulder.
For years, he had carried shame for not seeing the crimes around him.
Now the dead accountant had given him something different from innocence.
Context.
Bell's radio suddenly came alive.
A patrol officer had spotted Marcus's sedan three blocks away.
Then the lights in the house went out.
Rachel heard the back gate click.

A man's voice came from the darkness.
"Nobody move."
