Chapter 12 - The Theft in Rachel's Name

"I didn't make that transfer."

Rachel said it before anyone asked.

Melissa took the phone. "Call the bank now."

The bank froze the destination account within minutes, but the representative sounded worried.

"Mrs. Hale, the transfer was authenticated using your password, a one-time code, and biometric confirmation from a recognized device."

"That's impossible."

"The recognized device is listed as your smartphone."

Rachel looked down at the phone in her hand.

Evan cursed under his breath.

Vanessa sank into a chair.

"Marcus cloned your access."

Rachel turned on her. "How?"

"The cameras. Your Wi-Fi. Maybe your phone when I was in the house. I don't know."

"You expect me to believe you don't know?"

Vanessa's eyes flashed. "I came for three hundred thousand dollars, not two-point-seven million."

"That is not the defense you think it is."

Vanessa looked away.

At the station, she finally talked.

Marcus had contacted her two months earlier. He claimed he had found proof that Daniel hid money during their divorce.

"He said there was three hundred thousand I was owed."

Daniel stared at her. "So you attacked Rachel over a story from Marcus?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened. "I was angry."

Rachel leaned forward. "You grabbed me by the hair and hit me. Say what you did."

Vanessa met her eyes.

"I assaulted you."

It was the first honest sentence Rachel had heard from her.

Vanessa continued.

Marcus had told her to plant cameras while she distracted Rachel. But Vanessa claimed she had not planted them.

"Then who did?" Bell asked.

"I let Marcus's guy in through the back door the day before."

Daniel stood so fast his chair tipped.

"You gave someone access to our home?"

Vanessa flinched.

"Yes."

Bell stepped between them.

Rachel felt strangely calm now.

"What did Marcus want with the cameras?"

"Passwords. Conversations. Anything about B-17."

"And the wedding photo?"

Vanessa frowned. "What wedding photo?"

Everybody went still.

Rachel showed her a picture of the frame recovered from Vanessa's handbag.

Vanessa shook her head.

"That wasn't there when Marcus took me."

Bell looked at Daniel.

"Then someone else put the memory card in her bag after she was tied up."

Evan whispered, "Someone is feeding us evidence."

Rachel's phone lit up again.

Unknown number.
