Chapter 1 - The Cake

The cake hit Lily's face before anyone had time to understand what Vanessa was doing.
One second, five-year-old Lily Bennett was standing on a little pearl-white platform beside a three-tier birthday cake, smiling while two hundred guests sang to her under a crystal chandelier.
The next, Vanessa Cole had both hands on the cake tray.
She shoved the top layer straight into Lily's face.
White frosting burst across Lily's cheeks, curls, and pearl-white dress. A pink sugar rose slid down her shoulder and landed on the marble floor.
The room went silent.
Lily did not scream. That made it worse.
She stood frozen, tiny hands lifted, eyes blinking through frosting. Then her lower lip trembled.
"Mommy..."
Sarah Bennett was already moving.
She crossed the ballroom so fast that several guests stepped aside without being asked. Her husband, Mark, called her name from somewhere behind the crowd, but Sarah did not look back.
She reached Lily, pulled a napkin from the cake table, and gently wiped frosting away from her daughter's nose and mouth.
"Breathe, baby. I've got you."
Lily grabbed Sarah's wrist.
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Oh, come on. It was a joke. Kids love cake smashes."
Sarah stood and placed herself between them.
"Stay away from my daughter."
Vanessa's smile thinned. "Don't be dramatic."
She took one step closer.
Sarah slapped her.
The sound cracked through the room.
Vanessa stared at her in disbelief.
"You—"
Sarah slapped her again, controlled, sharp, and final.
Vanessa stumbled one step sideways and caught the edge of the gift table.
Gasps broke through the ballroom.
Mark finally pushed his way forward.
"Sarah! What the hell are you doing?"
Sarah turned to him, expecting anger at Vanessa.
Instead, Mark hurried to Vanessa.
He touched her cheek.
"Are you okay?"
Something inside Sarah went completely still.
Lily began to cry against her back.
Sarah looked at her husband of nine years, then at the woman he was protecting at their daughter's birthday party.
"Mark," she said quietly. "Your daughter is covered in cake."
He barely glanced at Lily.
"Vanessa didn't mean it like that."
The silence changed.
People were no longer shocked by the cake.
They were watching Mark.
Vanessa reached for his sleeve with the familiarity of someone who had done it a hundred times.
Sarah saw it.
So did Lily.

And from the back of the ballroom, Sarah's older brother Daniel suddenly raised his phone.
"Sarah," he said. "You need to see what I just recorded."
