Chapter 16 - The Sister No One Mentioned

Vanessa denied having a sister until Sarah showed her the photograph.
Then she went silent.
"Claire is my half-sister," she said finally. "We don't speak."
"She planned Lily's birthday."
Vanessa looked shocked.
"I didn't know."
Sarah did not believe her at first.
But Helen did.
"Look at Vanessa," Helen said later. "She has lied about plenty. She isn't lying about this."
They dug deeper.
Claire Cole had changed her surname eight years earlier. She had worked in corporate events, then quietly built relationships with Bennett executives.
She had also visited Mark's office four times in the month before the party.
Mark claimed the visits were about event invoices.
No one believed him anymore.
Police found Claire's apartment empty.
Her closets were cleared out.
Her computer was gone.
But one thing remained in a kitchen drawer: a printed copy of Bennett Development's emergency succession plan.
If Sarah were declared incapacitated, temporary voting control would pass to the board's executive committee.
Three people sat on that committee.
Mark.
Chief Financial Officer Thomas Reed.
And Margaret Bennett.
Sarah looked at her mother.
Margaret looked horrified.
"I haven't attended a board meeting in years."
Helen said, "You don't need to attend. You only need to exist on paper."
The plan was becoming clear.
Discredit Sarah.
Take Lily.
Argue Sarah was unstable.
Trigger temporary corporate control.
Move the remaining assets before anyone understood what happened.
Sarah asked the obvious question.
"Who benefits most?"
Helen answered quietly.
"Not Mark. Not Vanessa. The CFO."
Thomas Reed had worked for Sarah's father for twenty-seven years.
He knew every account.
Every debt.
Every secret.
And he had attended Lily's birthday party.
Daniel pulled up the security footage.
At 4:41 p.m., one minute before Daniel's account authorized the threatening payment, Thomas Reed entered the upstairs hallway.

At 4:43, he came back down.
He was holding the red key.
