Chapter 12 - The Warehouse

Sarah did not go alone.
She went with Daniel, Helen, and two private security officers. Police were notified and waited nearby because no active crime had yet been reported at the property.
The warehouse had been empty for years.
Mark stood inside beneath a hanging work light.
"You brought an army."
Sarah stopped ten feet away.
"You threatened my daughter."
"I didn't send that rock."
"Then tell me who did."
Mark looked exhausted. For the first time he seemed less like a villain and more like a man drowning in his own decisions.
"Vanessa has people."
Daniel laughed. "Vanessa is a nurse, not a crime boss."
"You don't know her brother."
Mark reached slowly into a metal cabinet and removed a small gray box.
"Your father gave me this before he died. He told me to give it to you only if the company was in danger."
Sarah did not move.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because it would have ended me."
Inside the box were letters, a hard drive, and one handwritten note.
SARAH - IF YOU ARE READING THIS, TRUST THE NUMBERS, NOT THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM.
Her father's handwriting.
Sarah's throat tightened.
Mark said, "The drive contains the real ownership records. Your father suspected someone inside the company was draining money before he got sick."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No. But I need you to believe this: I started moving money because I found the theft. I thought I could build a private reserve, keep the lenders quiet, and replace everything before you noticed."
Helen's expression was icy. "You committed fraud to cover suspected fraud."
"I panicked."
Sarah looked at him. "And Vanessa? The custody case? The pills?"
Mark lowered his head.
"That part was me."
No excuse.
No denial.
Sarah felt something inside her marriage finally die.
Then a sound came from the far end of the warehouse.
Metal scraping concrete.
One of the security officers turned.
A side door stood open.
The gray box had contained four envelopes.
May you like
Now there were only three.
Someone else was inside the warehouse.
