Chapter 14 - Vanessa's Story

Vanessa agreed to meet, but only in a crowded restaurant with cameras and witnesses.
Sarah accepted.
Vanessa arrived alone.
She wore no glamorous dress now, just jeans and a black coat. Without the party makeup, she looked tired.
Sarah felt no sympathy.
"Start talking."
Vanessa placed the missing envelope on the table.
"My father didn't die because of a random construction accident. He died because safety equipment failed at a Bennett site after he complained about cost cutting."
Sarah opened the envelope.
Inside were photocopies of inspection reports from 1998.
Several signatures belonged to her father.
Helen reviewed them carefully.
"These show violations," she said. "They don't prove intent."
Vanessa's eyes flashed. "He knew the site was unsafe."
Sarah looked at her. "And that justified what you did to Lily?"
Vanessa's expression changed.
"No."
"Say it again."
Vanessa looked away.
"No. It didn't."
"You went near her school. You accessed her medical records. You helped plant pills in my car."
"Mark planned the custody strategy."
"And you helped."
"Yes."
Sarah leaned forward. "Why?"
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Because I spent my whole life watching your family live in houses bought with money I believed should have been ours. My mother worked two jobs. We lost everything. Then I met Mark and found out your company was already cracking."
"So you decided to crack my daughter too?"
Vanessa flinched.
Sarah continued.
"You want revenge on my father? Fine. He's dead. You want justice for yours? Fine. Use a courtroom. But the second you used my child as a weapon, you became exactly what you claimed to hate."
Vanessa's eyes filled, but Sarah did not soften.
Then Vanessa said, "You still don't understand. I wasn't the one who sent the rock."
"Mark said your brother—"
"My brother has been dead for six years."
Sarah went still.
Vanessa pushed a second document across the table.
A recent bank transfer.
The payment for the threat had come from Bennett Development.
