Chapter 13 - The Missing Envelope

The security officers searched the warehouse.
No one was found.
But the rear fire door was open, and fresh tire marks cut across the wet gravel outside.
"What was in the missing envelope?" Sarah asked.
Mark shook his head. "I never opened them."
"You opened everything else."
"Not those. Your father sealed them."
Daniel picked up the remaining three.
Each was labeled by hand.
SARAH.
DANIEL.
MARGARET.
The missing envelope had no visible label in the security footage.
Back at Helen's office, they opened the three.
Sarah's contained a letter from her father.
He wrote that he had discovered unauthorized payments before his cancer diagnosis. He suspected a senior executive but lacked proof. He warned Sarah not to assume family loyalty was the same as honesty.
Daniel's letter contained a list of old property deeds.
Margaret's contained one sentence.
TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED IN 1998.
Margaret began shaking when Sarah read it aloud.
"Mom?"
"I can't."
Daniel stood. "You can, and you will."
Margaret looked twenty years older.
"Your father had a partner when he started the company. His name was Robert Cole."
Sarah frowned.
Cole.
Vanessa Cole.
"What happened to him?"
"He died in a construction accident. Your father bought his shares from the estate."
Helen's eyes narrowed. "Was the sale contested?"
Margaret nodded.
"Robert's widow said the shares were worth much more. She accused your father of taking advantage of her."
Daniel sat down slowly.
"Vanessa is Robert's daughter?"
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Sarah finally understood why Vanessa had entered Mark's life with such precision.
It had never been random.
Helen said, "If Vanessa believed the Bennett family stole her inheritance, she may have spent years building toward this."
Sarah looked at Mark.
"Did you know?"
He looked genuinely stunned.
"No."
Then Sarah's phone rang.
Vanessa.
Sarah answered.
"You found the letters," Vanessa said.
It was not a question.
Sarah's voice hardened. "What was in the fourth envelope?"
May you like
Vanessa laughed softly.
"The truth about how my father died."
