Chapter 11 - The Company Was Dying

Margaret denied it at first.
Then Sarah played the recording again.
Her mother's shoulders sagged.
"I was trying to protect you."
Sarah stared at her across the hotel table.
"From what? The truth?"
Margaret rubbed both hands over her face.
"Your father made bad investments during his final year. After he died, Mark discovered the debt. He told me if you knew how close the company was to collapse, you would sell."
"Maybe I should have."
"He said he could save it."
Daniel leaned forward. "By stealing from it?"
"I didn't know about that."
"But you knew he was hiding the losses."
Margaret nodded.
Sarah stood and walked to the window.
For years she had believed stepping away from the company had given Lily a calmer childhood. Mark praised her for it. Margaret encouraged it.
Meanwhile they had made decisions in her name.
"How bad is it?" Sarah asked.
Helen answered from the speakerphone.
"Without a complete audit, we don't know. But there are signs of loan defaults, hidden liabilities, and at least one property used twice as collateral."
Sarah turned.
"Can Mark do that without my signature?"
"Not legally."
Another forged document.
Daniel said, "So the custody case is leverage."
Helen agreed. "If Mark gets temporary control of Lily, he can argue Sarah is mentally unfit, then use that in corporate proceedings to challenge her decision-making authority."
Sarah's anger became clean and focused.
This was not about taking Lily because Mark wanted to be a father.
It was about taking Lily because Lily was the pressure point.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Mark.
SARAH, PLEASE. WE CAN FIX THIS. MEET ME ALONE.
Then a second message.
I HAVE SOMETHING YOUR FATHER LEFT YOU. MOM NEVER GAVE IT TO YOU.
Sarah showed Daniel.
"No," he said immediately.
Helen agreed. "Absolutely not alone."
Sarah stared at the screen.
"Where?" she texted.
Mark replied with an address.
Daniel went pale.
"That's Dad's old warehouse."
May you like
Sarah remembered it instantly.
The one building her father had ordered sealed six months before he died.
