Chapter 9 - The Name on the Transfers

Helen arranged a private conference room at her old law firm.

Sarah, Daniel, and a forensic accountant spent four hours going through the red ledger.

The pattern was simple once they knew where to look.

Bennett Development had paid millions to consulting firms that did not appear to have employees, offices, or clients.

Those companies transferred money again.

Then again.

Finally, the funds landed in an investment account under the name M. BENNETT HOLDINGS.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

"You?"

He stared at her. "Are you serious?"

"Your middle name is Michael."

"And Mom's name is Margaret."

Silence.

Helen pulled the incorporation documents.

M. Bennett Holdings had been created eight months earlier using a residential mailing address.

Margaret's address.

Sarah felt a familiar ache behind her eyes.

"No."

Daniel's voice was quiet. "We have to ask her."

They drove to Margaret's house.

She listened while Helen explained the account.

Then Margaret walked into the kitchen and returned with an old leather folder.

"Your father left this with me."

Inside was a signed power-of-attorney document Sarah had never seen.

It gave Mark authority to create financial entities using the Bennett family name for estate planning.

"I signed it after your father died," Margaret said. "Mark told me it would simplify taxes."

Helen studied the signature page.

"This document gives him limited authority. It does not authorize theft."

Margaret sat down heavily.

"I trusted him."

Sarah did not comfort her.

Not yet.

"Did you know about the custody case?"

"No."

"Did you know about Vanessa?"

Margaret hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

Sarah's voice dropped. "How long?"

"I suspected for a few months."

Daniel swore under his breath.

"And you said nothing?"

Margaret began crying. "I thought it would pass. I thought if Sarah knew, it would destroy the family."

Sarah laughed once, hollow.

"So you helped the lie survive."

Before Margaret could answer, the front window exploded inward.

Everyone ducked.

A rock landed on the floor wrapped in red paper.

Daniel picked it up carefully.

Written across the paper were six words:

GIVE BACK THE LEDGER OR LOSE HER.
