Chapter 6 - The Nurse

Vanessa's face changed when Sarah read the name aloud.

"You used to be a nurse," Sarah said.

Vanessa folded her arms. "I am a nurse. My license is active."

"Not at Lily's clinic."

"Mark gave me permission."

Helen's voice came sharply through the phone. "Permission from a parent does not automatically authorize a third party to alter or fabricate records. Sarah, do not argue. Preserve the log."

Sarah forwarded everything to Helen.

Mark looked furious now.

"You're making this bigger than it is."

"You wrote a custody petition accusing me of being dangerous."

"Because tonight proved my point."

"Tonight proved yours was a setup."

Vanessa stepped closer. "You really think a judge is going to side with a woman who hit me twice?"

Sarah looked at her.

"I think a judge is going to ask why you accessed a child's medical file six times."

For the first time, Vanessa looked away.

Daniel's phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

CHECK THE GARAGE CAMERA. 2:17 A.M. LAST TUESDAY.

They went downstairs.

Mark refused to follow.

The garage security system kept thirty days of recordings. Daniel pulled up Tuesday at 2:17 a.m.

The footage showed Vanessa entering through the side door.

She carried a black medical bag.

Ten minutes later Mark joined her.

They opened Sarah's SUV.

Vanessa took out a small prescription bottle and placed it in the center console.

Sarah's skin prickled.

"What is that?"

Daniel zoomed in.

The label had Sarah's name on it.

A sedative.

Sarah had never been prescribed one.

Helen spoke slowly. "Do not touch the vehicle. Call the police and your attorney—me—before anyone moves anything."

Sarah stared at the screen.

This was no longer infidelity.

No longer money.

Someone was building a story in which Sarah was unstable, medicated, violent, and unfit to raise her daughter.

A story with documents.

A story with planted evidence.

A story designed to survive a courtroom.

Then Daniel froze the video.

"Wait."

A third person appeared at the edge of the garage.

An older woman in a cream coat.

Sarah leaned closer.

Her breath caught.

"Mom?"
