Chapter 1 - The Push

The scream came after the crash.

Daniel Mercer was halfway across the living room when something heavy struck the marble floor in the foyer. The sound was wrong—too deep for a dropped vase, too violent for a chair tipping over.

Then his six-year-old son screamed from upstairs.

“Dad!”

Daniel ran.

His mother, Margaret, lay twisted at the bottom of the staircase, one arm beneath her, her silver hair spread across the first step like spilled thread. Olivia was already on her knees beside her.

“Oh my God,” Olivia gasped. “She fell. Daniel, she just fell. I tried to catch her.”

Daniel dropped beside his mother. “Mom? Mom, can you hear me?”

Margaret did not move.

His hands shook as he reached for his phone.

Then a small voice came from the upstairs railing.

“She’s lying.”

Daniel froze.

Ethan stood in the hallway in dinosaur pajamas, both hands wrapped around the wooden banister. His face was pale, and tears were running down his cheeks.

Olivia looked up so quickly that Daniel felt something cold move through his chest.

“Ethan,” she said sharply, “go back to your room.”

“No.”

“Now.”

Ethan pointed at her.

“She pushed Grandma.”

The whole foyer went silent.

Daniel slowly stood.

Olivia stared at their son. “Sweetheart, you’re scared. You didn’t see what happened.”

“I did.” Ethan’s voice cracked. “Grandma said she was going to tell Dad the truth. You grabbed her arm. She told you to let go. Then you pushed her.”

Daniel felt the phone slipping in his hand.

“What truth?” he asked.

Ethan looked at Margaret, then back at his father.

“About the money,” he whispered. “And the papers in Grandma’s room.”

For one second, Olivia’s face changed.

Not grief.

Not shock.

Panic.

Sirens began to rise somewhere beyond the front gates.

Daniel stepped between Olivia and the stairs. “What money?”

“Daniel, don’t do this right now.”

“My mother is unconscious on the floor.” His voice dropped. “My son says you pushed her. I’m doing this right now.”

Olivia’s eyes darted toward the hallway that led to Margaret’s guest suite.

Daniel saw it.

So did Ethan.

And that was when the little boy said something none of them would ever forget.

“Grandma told me if anything happened to her, I had to give Dad the blue envelope hidden inside the piano bench.”
