Chapter 18 - The Trap Inside the Trap

The insurance policy changed the case.
Until that moment, Daniel believed the conspiracy was about theft, blackmail and control.
Now investigators had to consider whether someone had planned for him to die.
Olivia denied knowing about the policy.
This time, forensic evidence supported her.
The electronic application came from Simon’s office computer. The beneficiary change used a scanned copy of Olivia’s signature taken from an unrelated trust document.
Simon had made Olivia look more guilty than she already was.
“He built a cage around everyone,” Reed said. “Caleb handled intimidation. Olivia moved money. Martin kept quiet. Simon kept the records that could destroy each of them.”
“And if I died?” Daniel asked.
“The policy pays Olivia. Simon controls her through blackmail. The trust becomes easier to manipulate while Ethan is a minor.”
Daniel felt physically ill.
In Vault Nine, police found the missing copy of Ethan’s tablet files.
The crucial clip showed no push, but it did capture Simon and Olivia speaking in the kitchen an hour earlier.
Simon: “Margaret knows too much.”
Olivia: “Then I’ll talk to her.”
Simon: “Talking is what got you here.”
Olivia: “I’m not hurting her.”
Simon laughed.
“You don’t have to. Just make sure she can’t reach Daniel before tonight.”
That sentence mattered.
It showed pressure.
It did not excuse the push.
But it established Simon’s role in creating the confrontation.
Prosecutors offered Olivia a choice: cooperate fully against Simon and Caleb, plead guilty to aggravated assault and financial crimes, or face a broader set of charges with no cooperation credit.
She took the deal.
Before signing, she asked to see Daniel.
They met through glass at the detention center.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, Olivia said, “I loved you.”
Daniel’s eyes burned.
“Maybe you did.”
“I still do.”
“That’s worse.”
She looked down.
“I kept thinking if I could fix the money before you found out, then none of it counted.”
“You pushed my mother.”
“I know.”
“You let Ethan carry the truth because you were too afraid to.”
Olivia began to cry.
“I know.”
Daniel pressed his palm against the glass, not as comfort, but as goodbye.
Then Olivia looked up.
“There’s something Ethan needs to hear from me.”
Daniel stiffened.
May you like
“What?”
“That none of this happened because he told the truth.”
