Chapter 9 - The Papers in Margaret's Room

Daniel returned home with Detective Reed and a search warrant.
Margaret’s guest suite looked untouched at first.
Then they noticed the desk.
One drawer sat half an inch higher than the others.
Reed pulled it free.
Behind it was a flat leather folder.
Inside were medical forms, court templates, copies of Margaret’s signature, and a nearly completed petition for emergency guardianship.
Petitioner: Olivia Mercer.
Proposed guardian: Daniel Mercer.
Daniel stared at his own name.
“I never agreed to this.”
Reed pointed to the attached physician statement.
It claimed Margaret had early dementia, paranoia, memory loss, and impaired judgment.
The doctor’s signature was fake.
Daniel knew because the doctor named on the form had been Margaret’s cardiologist for fifteen years—and had died eight months ago.
The plan became clear in pieces.
If Margaret were declared incompetent, Daniel would appear to control her interests while Olivia and Simon quietly controlled the paperwork placed in front of him.
They could sell property.
Move trust assets.
Silence objections by calling them symptoms.
Daniel felt sick.
Ethan stood in the hallway with Officer Alvarez.
He had been drawing while the adults searched.
“Dad?”
Daniel crouched. “Yeah, buddy?”
“Grandma knew about those.”
“The papers?”
Ethan nodded. “She found Mom practicing Grandma’s name.”
Reed looked up.
“Practicing?”
Ethan held out his drawing pad. On the back of one page were several shaky copies of the same signature: Margaret Mercer.
“I took it from Mom’s trash because I wanted paper for drawing.”
Daniel stared at the signatures.
His son had been walking through evidence for weeks without understanding it.
That thought broke something inside him.
He pulled Ethan close.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I should’ve told you.”
“No. Adults were supposed to protect you from this. Not the other way around.”
Ethan buried his face in Daniel’s shoulder.
Then Alvarez’s radio crackled.
A voice requested Detective Reed immediately.
Reed answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?” Daniel asked.
Reed lowered the radio.
“Your wife’s attorney says Olivia wants to make a statement.”
Daniel stood.
“About what?”
Reed hesitated.
“She says Simon Vale ordered the break-in, forged the guardianship paperwork, and threatened to hurt Ethan.”

Daniel’s relief lasted exactly two seconds.
Then Reed added, “She also says she did not push your mother.”
