Chapter 19 - Ethan's Truth

Ethan did not testify in open court.

A child forensic interviewer recorded his statement in a quiet room painted with clouds, and the judge later approved its use as part of the plea proceedings.

Daniel was grateful.

His son had already carried enough.

Still, guilt followed Ethan everywhere.

One night, he stood in Margaret’s hospital room staring at the scar near her hairline.

“Grandma?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“If I didn’t tell Dad, would Mom still be home?”

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

Margaret’s face tightened.

She held out her hand.

Ethan climbed onto the chair beside her.

“Maybe,” she said carefully. “But home would still have been full of lies.”

Ethan looked down.

“I made Mom go to jail.”

“No.”

“But I told.”

Margaret touched his cheek.

“Your mother made choices. Grown-up choices. You told the truth about what you saw. Those are not the same thing.”

Ethan began crying.

“I still love her.”

“You are allowed to.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

Margaret continued, “Loving someone does not mean pretending they did nothing wrong.”

That sentence stayed with Daniel.

Weeks later, Simon Vale pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, fraud, extortion, identity theft and attempted insurance fraud. Caleb accepted a cooperation agreement and admitted his role in the blackmail network.

Martin surrendered his law license and faced charges related to obstruction and failure to disclose evidence after the fall.

Olivia pleaded guilty.

At sentencing, she did not ask Daniel for forgiveness.

She looked at Ethan only once, through tears, and said, “You did the right thing.”

Daniel watched his son’s shoulders shake.

The judge imposed a prison sentence that accounted for Olivia’s cooperation but did not erase the violence or financial crimes.

When it was over, Daniel expected relief.

Instead, he felt empty.

Outside the courthouse, Detective Reed handed him a final evidence packet.

“We’re closing your family’s part of the case,” he said.

Daniel nodded.

Then he noticed a small envelope clipped to the back.

“What’s this?”

“Found in Vault Nine. Simon had it filed under your father’s name.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a letter written by Robert Mercer seven years earlier.

The first line made Daniel stop walking.

SON, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN MY SILENCE COST MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD.
