Chapter 14 - The First Cover-Up

The recording lasted twenty-eight minutes.

By the end, Daniel understood how the trap had begun.

Years earlier, Caleb had threatened to release documents connecting Olivia to Phoenix Equity. Robert Mercer had paid him two hundred thousand dollars to disappear and protect his son’s new marriage.

Simon had arranged the transfer.

And kept copies of everything.

After Robert died, Simon possessed the perfect weapon.

He knew Olivia’s secret.

He knew Daniel’s father had hidden it.

He knew exactly how much shame and fear could be turned into leverage.

Detective Reed listened twice.

“Simon didn’t create Olivia’s vulnerability,” he said. “He inherited it.”

Daniel stared out the window.

“And then he monetized it.”

“Yes.”

“But Olivia still signed the transfers.”

“Yes.”

“She still forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

“And she still pushed my mother.”

Reed did not answer.

He did not need to.

Later that day, Caleb Ross was arrested at a motel outside Tucson after police traced a rental car connected to the break-in at Daniel’s house.

He asked for a deal within an hour.

According to Caleb, Simon had promised him two million dollars if he kept Olivia compliant and helped move funds through Phoenix shell companies.

“Did Caleb threaten Ethan?” Daniel asked Reed.

“He says Simon did.”

“Do you believe him?”

“I believe men facing federal charges become very interested in telling useful truths.”

Caleb also revealed something worse.

Simon had not planned to stop at the family trust.

He intended to force a sale of Mercer Development’s most valuable property portfolio, route part of the proceeds through a false acquisition, and leave Olivia holding the forged approvals.

“She was supposed to take the fall?” Daniel asked.

Reed nodded.

“Eventually.”

Daniel felt no satisfaction.

Olivia had been used.

But she had also used him.

Both things could be true.

That night, while Daniel sat beside Margaret at the hospital, his phone rang from the county detention center.

Olivia.

He almost declined.

Margaret opened her eyes.

“Answer it.”

Daniel did.

Olivia’s voice shook.

“Daniel, I need you to listen. Simon knows something the police don’t.”

“What?”

“He has a copy of Ethan’s video.”

May you like

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

“And if he thinks Caleb is talking, he’ll destroy the only part that proves what happened before your mother fell.”
