Chapter 3 - The Name in the File

Daniel read the name three times.

Caleb Ross.

It meant nothing to him.

But it meant something to Olivia.

“I don’t know anyone named Caleb Ross,” she said.

Ethan spoke from behind Daniel. “Yes, you do.”

Olivia’s face hardened. “Ethan.”

“He came here.”

Daniel turned to his son. “When?”

Ethan rubbed his sleeve across his wet cheeks. “At night. Mom said he was fixing something.”

“What was he fixing?”

“I don’t know. He didn’t have tools.”

Officer Alvarez took notes without changing expression.

Olivia’s voice became low and controlled. “Our son is upset. You’re turning random things he remembers into evidence.”

“No,” Daniel said. “Mom did that before she hit the stairs.”

He held up the papers.

Olivia stared at him with a look he had never seen in twelve years of marriage.

“You don’t know what your mother was doing to me.”

“Then tell me.”

“She hated me from the day we met.”

“That doesn’t explain a forged signature.”

“It explains why she would make something look worse than it is.”

Daniel almost laughed. “Did she forge my name to frame you?”

Olivia said nothing.

Officer Alvarez asked Daniel to take Ethan to the hospital and told Olivia she needed to remain at the house until detectives finished documenting the scene.

For the first time, Olivia looked afraid of being left alone with the police.

At St. Vincent Medical Center, Daniel sat beside Ethan beneath bright fluorescent lights while surgeons evaluated Margaret for a head injury and two broken ribs.

Ethan leaned against him.

“Is Grandma going to die?”

Daniel’s throat closed.

“No,” he said, though he had no right to promise it. “She’s tough.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

After a while, he reached into the pocket of his pajama pants.

“I forgot.”

He handed Daniel a small brass key.

“Grandma gave me this yesterday.”

Daniel turned it over. A white plastic tag hung from the ring.

BOX 317.

“Did she say what it opens?”

“She said if Mom found the blue envelope, I should give you this instead.”

Daniel stared at the key.

His mother had not been preparing for an argument.

She had been preparing for something to happen to her.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

The caller ID showed the name of the family attorney.

When Daniel answered, Martin Shaw did not say hello.

He said, “Daniel, whatever you do, do not let Olivia get access to Margaret’s safe-deposit box.”
