Chapter 2 - The Blue Envelope

The paramedics arrived in less than six minutes.
To Daniel, it felt like an hour.
They stabilized Margaret’s neck, checked her breathing, and lifted her onto a stretcher while Olivia stood near the doorway with both arms wrapped around herself.
“She fell,” she kept repeating. “It happened so fast.”
Ethan did not look at her.
A police officer named Lena Alvarez knelt in front of him. “Buddy, I’m not going to ask you a bunch of questions right now. I just need to know if you feel safe.”
Ethan reached for Daniel’s hand.
“With Dad.”
Olivia flinched.
Daniel noticed that too.
When the ambulance pulled away, Daniel wanted to climb inside, but Officer Alvarez stopped him long enough to separate everyone’s first statements. Olivia insisted Margaret had lost her balance during an argument.
“What were you arguing about?” Alvarez asked.
“Family things.”
“What family things?”
Olivia’s jaw tightened. “Private family things.”
From the living room, Ethan called, “The blue envelope.”
Olivia turned.
Daniel moved first.
The piano sat beneath the front windows, an old black Steinway Margaret had given them when Ethan was born. Daniel lifted the bench lid.
Sheet music. A metronome. Ethan’s beginner book.
No envelope.
Olivia let out a tiny breath.
Ethan climbed onto the bench and reached underneath. “Grandma said not inside.”
His fingers found a strip of tape.
A blue envelope dropped into Daniel’s palm.
Olivia took one step forward.
Daniel looked at her.
“Don’t.”
“I just want to see what she put in there.”
“So do I.”
The envelope had his name written across the front in Margaret’s careful handwriting.
DANIEL—OPEN THIS IF I CANNOT SPEAK FOR MYSELF.
Inside were photocopies of bank transfers, property records, and a notarized document Daniel had never seen before.
His eyes stopped on his own signature.
Except he had never signed it.
The document authorized a $740,000 line of credit against a lake house held in the Mercer family trust.
The money had been transferred in three pieces to a company called Northline Holdings LLC.
Daniel looked up.
Olivia had gone completely still.
“You know this company,” he said.
“No.”
“Then why did you just stop breathing?”
Officer Alvarez stepped closer.
Daniel flipped to the next page.
There was a second signature.
Olivia Mercer.

And beneath it, in Margaret’s handwriting, were six words underlined twice:
ASK OLIVIA WHO CALEB ROSS REALLY IS.
