Chapter 10 - What Rosa Saw

Ethan stared at Rosa.

"What did you say?"

Rosa's hands shook. "I was working the night your father died. Mr. Richard and Nolan were fighting in the library. Your father said he was going to the police in the morning."

"About the money?"

"About everything. The fake invoices. The city contracts. The payments."

Mara glanced at the locked door as pounding echoed somewhere down the hall.

"Rosa, what happened next?"

"Bianca came in with a glass of whiskey. She gave it to Mr. Richard. Twenty minutes later, he collapsed."

Ethan went still.

"Did you tell the police?"

Rosa looked ashamed. "Nolan offered to pay for my daughter's surgery. Then he told me if I spoke, immigration officers would come for my sister. I was scared."

"You were threatened," Mara said.

"I was silent. A man died because I was silent."

Ethan's voice softened. "The man responsible is the one who hurt him."

Rosa opened a dryer and pulled out a sealed envelope wrapped in plastic.

"Your father gave me this two days before he died. He said if anything happened, I should give it to you. But then you were accused of stealing money and disappeared. I didn't know who to trust."

Ethan tore open the envelope.

Inside was a brass key and a handwritten note.

Ethan,

If Nolan moves against you, the truth is where your mother used to hide from the storms.

Do not trust the study.

--Dad

Ethan read the line again.

"Where did your mother hide from storms?" Mara asked.

His eyes lifted.

"The old wine cellar."

Rosa nodded. "It was sealed when the house was renovated."

"Not sealed," Ethan said. "Hidden."

A hard knock struck the laundry door.

"Rosa?" called Nolan.

Nobody moved.

"Open the door."

Rosa looked at Mara, then at Ethan.

"Go through the service chute. It drops behind the kitchen pantry."

"You're coming," Mara said.

"No. They don't know I helped you yet."

"They will."

Rosa gave a tired smile. "Then I should make the lie worth something."

Ethan squeezed her shoulder once.

Mara climbed into the narrow chute after him.

As Rosa closed the panel, Nolan hit the door again.

Then Mara heard Bianca's voice from the hall.

"Nolan, stop. The police are here."

May you like

A beat of silence.

Bianca added, "And they're asking for you."
