Chapter 11 - The Police at Greystone

Mara landed hard on bags of flour behind the pantry.

"Graceful," Ethan whispered.

"I'm going to pretend you didn't say that."

Sirens flashed through the kitchen windows.

They could hear officers entering the front hall.

Mara almost relaxed.

Ethan did not.

"If Nolan called them himself, they're here for me."

"Bianca said they're asking for him."

"Bianca lies when she breathes."

They stayed behind the pantry door while voices carried from the foyer.

"Mr. Harrow," an officer said, "we received a report of an assault at Oak Hills Cemetery and a second report of an armed disturbance at this residence."

Bianca said quickly, "Mara attacked me. Ethan helped her break in."

Mara rolled her eyes.

Then Nolan spoke, smooth and wounded. "My brother is mentally unstable. He's been missing for months after committing serious financial crimes. Please be careful."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Mara touched his arm. "Don't give him what he wants."

They slipped through the kitchen and down the old basement stairs.

The wine cellar door had been covered by decorative shelving. Ethan found a tiny keyhole beneath the lowest shelf.

The brass key fit.

A section of wall released with a dull click.

Behind it was a narrow stone room smelling of earth and cork.

Mara switched on her phone flashlight.

There were no wine bottles.

There were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Bank records. Contracts. Printed emails. Photographs.

And on a small table sat a black leather ledger.

Ethan stopped breathing.

"Dad."

Beside the ledger, Mara saw an old family photograph and a digital recorder.

She pressed play.

Richard Harrow's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this, something has happened to me. Nolan has been moving company money through Halcyon Municipal Partners. Bianca knows. Ethan does not. Ethan tried to stop him."

Ethan closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"There is one more person involved. Someone Ethan trusts."

Footsteps sounded outside the hidden room.

Mara froze.

Richard's recorded voice said a name.

"Daniel Keene."

Mara's blood ran cold.

Mr. Keene.

The gentle estate manager with the cane.

The man who had hired Mara.

The hidden door opened behind them.

Mr. Keene stood there.

And he was holding a gun.
